Aberdeenshire / Re: Amelia / Elizabeth Mackie
« on: Saturday 31 January 15 01:35 GMT (UK)  »
Bit late here...I have an Elizabeth Mackie in my tree listed as possibly born 1811.  She married John McCartney in 1837, Greyfriars, Aberdeen.  I have no record of her death (and I've searched high and low).

I have McCartney (Macartney/McArtney) ancestors from Glasgow pre-1855.

Roman Catholic all the way!

Interesting information, thank you.

I must have been given some misinformation as my ancestor passed away in 1867, so I imagine he was not part of "Ogston & Tennant" exactly.

I guess I will have to do more digging around.

Thank you all very  much for the information and links.  Much appreciated.

I am pretty sure "Calton Downs" is "Calton" in Glasgow, but there is no Deacons Close.

Lanarkshire / Glasgow area Soap Factories/Chemical Co's.

Does anybody have any information at all on soap factories or chemical works in the Glasgow area?  St. Rollux was one, not able to find much from my location in  Canada on it.  Was there another south west of Glasgow? Or in Old Kilpatrick? I know Charles Tennant was busy in the area and he partnered with "Soapy" Ogston at some point.

The reason that I ask is that I have an ancestor who was a Journeyman Soapmaker.  He ended up in Aberdeen working for Ogston & Tennant.  But he shows as living in Lanark/Glasgow from his marriage in 1807 until I am guessing from Census reports - some time between 1841-1851 when he shows up in Aberdeen.  Most of his children were baptised in the RC church in Glasgow.

In convict transport reports for some of his children his occupation was 'soap boiler' in the early 1830's. One location for a residence from the court records places that family at Deacons Close in Calton Downs.  I have searched maps but cannot find that street name today.

Also, does anybody know if Charles Tennant's companies kept any detailed records that could hopefully/possibly/ miraculously be stored in a dusty  archive somewhere?  hahaha.

Thanks in advance for any info.

Lanarkshire / Nelly McCartney Glasgow 1807-25

Does anybody have this person in their tree.  Very elusive for me. She shows up as a witness to various McCartney births of a John McCartney.

I realize it's a long shot, but I have searched a few places and cannot find anything on Nelly or Ellen or Helen.....

Much appreciated.

Inverness / Re: Henderson / Grant family from Fortrose
« on: Sunday 13 September 09 04:44 BST (UK)  »
Hello

Do you have anybody in your tree who would match my brick wall?

His name was Donald Grant, married to Margaret Ross.

I have him listed as born in Nigg or Tain and believe he married Margaret Ross in Whitebog, as I can find a listing for a "Daniel Grant" and Margaret Ross in Whitebog on 1 Aug 1834 and their first child May was born in June 1835.

from the 1841 census he was listed as 55 years old (1786-ish)
from the 1851 census he was listed as 60 (1791-ish)
from the 1861 census he was listed as 78 (1783-ish)

He was in the 78th Regiment of Foot and was discharged at 27 years old after 9 years and 5 months of service which, I believe would put his birthdate (that he told them) at around 1785.

and from his death info on scotlands people it lists his age at death as 85 (he passed away in 1867 in Ardersier) which would put him around 1782.  He and Margaret lived their lives in Ardersier after his service at Fort George.

His son John gave the information on his death and listed his parents as Donald Grant (cotton weaver) and Margaret Gair but I can find no info through Scotlands People or the LDS or IGI sites.

The reason I ask if that Fortrose is very close to Whitebog.

Thank you in advance for any info you may have.

(I am puzzled as my gggrandmother's middle name was McKenzie, and she used the crest and wore the tartan so I am confused as to where that name came from as it is not on her mother's side).

I'm very late to this thread, but I was in Aberdeen last year on a family history pilgrimage and took some pictures on Shiprow.  I had people in my family who lived there as well.

Here are some pictures that I took on Shiprow.

Hi Leslie!

It's our John, but on the Census, they're listed as Cornes.  I can send you the copy, which I'll do right now!
