Family History Programs, Tree Organisation, Presentation / Re: Windows 10 PC
« on: Monday 29 April 24 12:12 BST (UK)  »
Unfortunately there are as many different opinion as there are software programs.

Try the various programs - all of the current Windows based programs will run on a Windows 10 PC.
and find one that you are comfortable with - many offer either a trial period or cut down versions for a trial or there are even free programs.

have a look at this section on Rootschat where various programs are discussed/recommended

Scotland / Re: Scottish marriages conundrum!
« on: Sunday 28 April 24 15:54 BST (UK)  »
If there was no divorce it leaves three possibles

1. By sheer coincidence there were two Annie O'briens whose parents also had the same name (unlikely but stranger things have happened)

2. The 2nd marriage for Annie  may have been because she believed her first husband to be dead, the time period appears to be long enough but if that was the case there remains the question of why she declared herself a spinster and not a widow.

3. Given the distance between Glasgow and Aberdeen Annie may have obtained what was sometimes referred to as a divorce by geography - ie she moved away from anybody who may have known her and lived a different life (I have a few of these)

Renfrewshire / Re: inverclyde intimations
« on: Sunday 28 April 24 15:21 BST (UK)  »

I now have 13  .pdf files, which total 121.4 Mb saved on my computer.
So although the main site no longer gives access, the files are still currently downloadable.
How long they will remain on the server is anyones guess, but whenever I come across anything like this which is freely downloadable I do so and save it if I can, as so many specialist projects like this do disappear in time.

Boo

There is a 14th file Soldiers of Inverclyde – Military Entries 1914-1918. It is in exactly the same format indicating it is part of the series but it is not on the Watt site it is at

Ireland / Re: Advantages of being Church of Ireland in 1800 - 1900s Ireland?

What political and economic advantages are being referred to?

Maybe I have misinterpreted. Perhaps it's the church that was said to enjoy those advantages, rather than individuals who profess to be Church of Ireland?

Probably a bit of both - The Church had a lot of power and being on the right side would provide some advantages and connections.
Presbyterians tended to be descended from Scottish incomers and often found them selves stuck between two warring factions and trusted by neither. In 1639 The English Authorities tried to impose the so called Black Oath on all Presbyterians (basically denying the National Covenant in Scotland and accepting Charles II as the Head of the Church). Many fled back to Scotland and others started the emigration of Ulster Scots to the Americas. The authorities started systematically disarming all Presbyterians (fearing an uprising) and when the local Irish did rebel in 1641 many were killed in the sectarian violence. (The numbers are often disputed and seem to depend upon which side is writing the narrative)

Ireland / Re: Consanguineous difference?
« on: Friday 19 April 24 21:36 BST (UK)  »
The American Chart is for Civil Law not Church Law. RC marriages (in the Uk & Ireland) involving cousins of whatever degree do require dispensation from the Church obtained through application via the local Priest.

The Laws in the UK and Ireland regarding what forms or doesn't form an Incestuous relationship are based upon the Bible where Cousins are not mentioned

In the USA it would appear to depend on which state you live in or get married in but according to this article from Wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cousin_marriage_law_in_the_United_States  their primary concern is in regard to first cousins.

As to whether there was any benefit for those involved in being parsimonious with the truth it wouldn't be the first or only time its happened.

Do you have Joseph's Birth Registration.

As there is no father listed on it the chances of finding/identifying his father are slim. DNA may be your only solution.

PS as others here may say don't trust online trees and take their findings with not a pinch of salt but a mountain of it.

Mental Deficiency  Act 1913

Reading the wording of this legislation shows it's potential for exploitation
