Sally

I was given a photograph and on the back it says Captain Sinclair of Kirkhouse. No other information is provided.

What sparked my interest was that Kirkhouse, South Ronaldsay in Orkney is where my Sinclair family lived for many years. I am sure that there is a relationship. I also think that the photograph may be Captain Sinclair and his wife.

Hi Sally

Yes I received the e-mail notification.

I would be very interested in any information that you can provide about Captain Sinclair.

I think the trascriber in the 1881 simply guessed at the birth locations as it is barely readable and the 1891 census shows Temple as being born in Ontario.

Caithness / Looking for help to find a marriage
« on: Monday 27 September 10 02:47 BST (UK)  »
Hi All

I am having a lot of problems find a marriage for Thomas Sinclair born abt 1836 in Wick. He married a Georgina Miller, I think in Caithness as their first child Amelia Reid Sinclair, b. 2nd March 1856, Wick, Caithness.

they then moved to South Ronaldsay and had a couple of children there, but too early for the marriage details to be on the registry. This family are on the 1861 census for South Ronaldsay, but seem to vanish after this and then turn up in Canada. in the Canadian 1891 census, there are two other children Elizabeth/Lizzie and Margaret/Maggie stated as being born in Scotland. However I cannot find them. There were a number of other children born in Canada.

Any help on this would be much appreciated.

Hi Cando

That definitely looks like him. Many thanks as I had only his birth and parents names..

I had the following on him and his ship.

Captain Kelly, who was in command of the Nelson on the voyage out in 1892, reported exceptionally heavy gales during the run out. The ship left Barry, North Wales, on August 12, and experienced light winds until October 18, when a terrific gale was encountered. Large quantities of water flooded the decks, carrying away bulwarks and doing other damage on deck. The cargo shifted, and was righted under great difficulties

Thanks for looking. If it was Captain William Christie Sinclair there would have been something I am sure as he was a well known captain. Amongst other ships he was captain of the Tamawara.

Jamjar I am in Glasgow. I am a member of a very good and helpful Scottish forum.

If there is anything I can do for you here in Scotland let me know and I will see what I can do.
