Limerick / Re: Fitzgerald and Switzer circa 1828
« on: Sunday 02 March 08 00:22 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Christopher,
The confusion arose because I had various BDM certificates on the desk about the Fitzgerald family.

The Fitzgeralds I am searching for are:

1    G G G Grandfather Michael Bartholomew Fitzgerald who in one document is a Jeweller in Limerick possibly in 10 Patrick Street, Corbally, Limerick.

2 Honoriah Switzer who married M B Fitzgerald and I understand was a Widow when she married Michael.
It is not clear if Honoriah is the mother of the next:-

3  G G Grandmother Mary Ann Fitzgerald born 1828 in Limerick. She married (at age 15) a James Stretton of Killorgan, Co. Kerry.
They came to Australia and arrived on board the St. Vincent in 1849.

On the death certificate of Mary Ann, her son (William Fitzgerald Stretton) states that Mary Ann's Dad was "John Fitzgerald, Officer in British Army"

Note that William F Stretton was born in Plomesgate, Suffolk, UK 1843 ie just after the marriage.
James Stretton was an "Outdoor Servant" working at Kirstoford UK and apparently became well off before setting out to OZ.

James died and Mary Ann married a John Garty in 1860 in Maitland NSW and my Grandmother was from this union.
On this marriage certificate, Mary Ann's Dad is stated as "Michael Fitzgerald Jeweller"

Hope this long story clears the confusion.

Best wishes,

Hi Jorose and Infobunny,

Thanks Jorose,
it looks like I will spend a lot of time on the internet with these Ethersey people - unfortunatley, we only have "Dial-Up' speed and most times the best is around 40K bits/sec so it takes ages to search.

Infobunny, I obtained the Marriage Cert. for Maria and there was NO details about parents??? This was on the certificate
V18471128 73B/1847  WILLIAMS  JOHN  GARTY  MARIA E

I will now order the other certificate to see if it contains any details of parents.

Hi to Infobunny and others
Thanks for the information re Maria Elizabeth Garty, her birth and the passage of the Gartys from Madras to London.

Have just heard via that John Garty's wife was Frances Ethersey not Hethersey, and her family were landed gentry with a baronetcy in the family.   There is apparently a portrait of John Garty in existence in New South Wales, held by a Peter Courtis - another Garty descendant.
So it looks as though, at last, I'm getting some details of this branch of the family.

ps: took so long to reply because our computer crashed.

Have reached a complete stalemate over Grandfather Joseph Alexander Miller who arrived in Sydney, Australia circa 1879 age 25.

He had 9 children in Sydney and on ALL birth certificates there are different places for HIS birth?
eg Kingston Jamaica; Liverpool; Halifax; Halifax Canada; Portsmouth UK; Portsmouth Jamaica and just Jamaica etc.

He was a Ship's Cook and opened restaurants in Sydney.

On his death certificate one son states that J A's parents were Joseph Miller and Margaret Turner married in St Ann Bay Jamaica.

I have tried numerous West Indies sites without success, SO, Any help please.

Any interest in RootsChat on the West Indies?

Hi to aghadowey,
Thanks for pointing out the 1930 error.
and hi to jorose,

I had done a search on fibis and all I came up with was his Bond on arrival as a passenger in 1821. I presume that this Bond allowed him to work in Fort St. George at his trade as a Tailor.
However your info re leaving India makes sense as Maria was born in 1831 and the next child was apparently born in the UK

In my fibis search I found that John's "Sureties" for his Bond were:
Edward Dumsday, Shephards Market, May Fair, Tailor.
Samuel Dodson, Peters Street, Soho, Tailor.

Waterford / Phelan circa 1814 -1844

I'm searching for Bridget Phelan born circa 1843 in Co. Waterford.

Bridget married a James Delaney in the RC Church, Oberne, District of Wagga Wagga NSW, Australia September 1863.

Mother and Father are:
Mary Fitzgerald and Thomas Phelan both of Tramore, Co. Waterford circa 1812-1815.

Other children (Bridget's siblings) could be:
Denis 1842, Mary 1845, Thomas & Catherine 1848, Ellen 1850, Michael 1852 and Ann 1857.

Bridget could not write at the marriage ceremony and made her "Mark" .
Thomas is listed as father and no mother's name is given on the marriage certificate.
On Bridget's Death Certificate, her mother is listed as Mary Fitzgerald.

Any help -PLEASE - to trace these G Grandparents.
