Hello Simon

I did not get to the bottom of it but suspect he was a crew member possibly on the Hovding.

When he left Sweden his birth name was Theodore Frans Bergstrom but in New Zealand he was know as William Francis Anderson -  bit of a coincidence that we have an Anderson as you do.

It would be great to locate the crew list to set this search to bed.

This person, H. Lindall, described as British on a ship manifest with his birth year as 1881 and with the occupation of plasterer sounds very much very much like my long elusive grandfather Albert Clarence Lindale. The H could be Harry which was a nick name he was known as by his friends and family.

The ship he arrived in Auckland  on apparently as an assisted immigrant  was the Victoria which sailed from Sydney arriving in Auckland on 1st November 1905 - two and a half years before the marriage of Albert Clarence Lindale.

This information has come from Family Search shipping records for New Zealand

What was his history prior to his arrival her in NZ? Any ideas?

Thanks for your message relating to Abe Romain who was my father's cousin

lAbe spent most of his life outside of New Zealand, initially in Sydney, then in the UK and in 1938 back to Sydney where he lived and worked up to the time of his death.

I would like to help as much as I am able

That is very interesting -  I did not know of this. Yes, although his legal Name was Albert Clarence Lindale he was also known as Harry Lindale and Snowy Lindale.

His first wife was Rosie Crundwell, his second wife was Helen Easton. He had an illegitimate child in 1925 from Helen

What is the message please. What name and address for photographer........can  you scan and post please?

Age 70 at death 1953....who is the informant..........do you have an earlier reference for his age eg. birth certificate of a child,  preferably originating from Harry himself ?"

The message says "Yours sincerely". The studio was Lovell-Smith of Hastings, New Zealand. Hastings. A question arises here -  why have his photo taken in Hastings when he lived in Wellington?

It looks like he was sudenly two years younger in his life with his second wife.

All very confusing -  no wonder he is a mystery


The informant on my grandfather's death was his wife whom he had a relationship with from about 1924 althugh he did not marry until 1942.

I have the birth certificate of my father  and brother and his three  sisters- the informant was his mother Rosie. Calculated year of birth is 1881 from the records of three of the siblings and 1882 for one sister.

I do not have the certificate of his daughter from his second relationship - born in 1925, seventeen years before her parents married.
