There are a number of villages in North Warwickshire which have a spelling like Asbery -
Arbury, Astley, Arley, Ansley and Ansty.

I think it would be most appropriate if Harry could be encouraged to donate his Alfred Herbert archive to the Coventry Archives at the Herbert Museum. I'm sure that they and future generations would appreciate their value. Another alternative archive is the Modern Records Centre at Warwick University.

Warwickshire / Re: Clayton Family living around the Warwickshire area (maybe travelers)
« on: Wednesday 09 October 13 22:35 BST (UK)  »
The Clayton surname seems very common in the Birmingham area.
I have Birmingham Claytons on my family tree - though as they are not direct ancestors of mine, I haven't done much research on them as yet. They don't match any of the names already mentioned.
There were two canal carrying companies with the name Clayton -
-Fellows, Morton and Clayton, who specialised in long distance canal traffic, particularly between London and Birmingham, and between the Midlands and the North West. They had a yard in Fazeley Street, Birmingham, but I think the company's head office may have been in London.
This company was nationalised in the 1940's and was incorporated into British Waterways.
- Thomas Clayton, of Oldbury, a much smaller company, which stayed independent and traded until approximately 1970, latterly specialising in the transport of oil and gas tar mainly between the Midlands and the North West.
Note that the Clayton name in both instances was the name of one of the principle directors of the company, and not one of the boatmen.

Hi,

The county archives might be able to help:

Nanny Jan

Note that Dudley was in Worcestershire, not Warwickshire, so it may be a good idea to look at that record office and post a query in that county section !

The last OS plan which shows them seems to be 1971. The site is now occupied by 10-14 Vine Lane and those houses appear to be of about that date.

Warwickshire / Re: The White Hart Pub (Stoneleigh)
« on: Saturday 06 April 13 21:26 BST (UK)  »
As far as I am aware, there has never been a pub in Stoneleigh village. The village was owned by the Leigh family and I understand they did not allow the sale of alcohol. The only place where it is sold today is the village club.
However Stoneleigh parish was/is much larger than the village and the pub you mention may have existed at one time in one of the surrounding villages -though I'm not aware of one locally with that name.

Note that Tysoe and Kenilworth are two seperate places, both in Warwickshire but 24 miles apart.

You can see old OS maps of the area on www.old-maps.co.uk.
They show that Barston Close and surrounding roads were built between 1951 and 1959 - the 1951 map shows an open field with a pond.

I've been past their building hundreds of times, and my mother was born nearby, yet I never knew they made tennis balls -they don't publicise themselves very much !!
What a revelation !
