Yes...I've checked marriages all over!.  To any John Foster and Sarah anyone.  There are a couple of same, but don't match up with the known children.

I'll have another look at the registration of births - as you say, it's certainly a lot easier and cheaper than the marriage certificates. Hopefully, they will put them (marriages) online on day  ::).

Gee's 7 years ago I started with these two!!!. Still not much further advanced.

Cheers

Just been re-reading through the thread...and I've once again written this year to the WYAS (2023) regarding church records for Hunslet.

This time - I got another archivist who said that yes they do have them (just shows you that you need to revisit certain information if your not happy - just in case!)......and they have said that the baptisms/deaths - some banns were in with the St. Peter's Church in Leeds records - which they are.  You have to search, but mostly they are listed towards the end of each year.  They are also on Ancestry if you have a subscription.

BUT...there are still no marriages for John & Sarah (anyone) at that time that fit.

Dobfarm could be correct in that the marriage was by different means than normally what was expected.

I've also have the death certificate for Elizabeth Foster aged 15 and a Millhand, living in Walker Court and died of cholera (I did read that there was an epidemic that year)- the informant was 'John Foster' in attendance at the death....but not named as her father?

Still looking for baptisms (?) for Elizabeth and Jane. They could very well be the children of the older Foster girls....because Mary the eldest child of John & Sarah is also AWOL at this time....... Very puzzling that's for sure. :)

Cheers

Afternoon everyone, it's been a couple of years and I'm still trying to track down some information about this couple...especially their marriage.

Well, I contacted the WYAS once again a couple of months ago to ask them if they had found any of the records I was after (back in 2021) (got a different Archivist this time).  And finding out that at the time (eg 1808-1816 that the marriage I was looking for), Hunslet was a Chapelry of St. Peter's Leeds and are available in the records of St. Peter's Leeds.
(You have to look for them....nearly at the end of some of the records for each year). Also has baptisms & deaths as well. (on Ancestry)

So my post is to let anyone who is interested that the early BDM's for Hunslet are available in the records of St Peter's Leeds - which you can get a look up service from the WYAS or as above, if you have Ancestry they are on there.  And no I still haven't found that marriage anywhere!..still looking.  ???

Cheers

Morning....thanks for your help with this family!.

Francis' discharge papers give his age as being 41 years of age and that he enlisted in 1801 and discharged in 1821.  Pension date was the 25/7/1821 but as to where he was discharged?  He was born in Drum in Roscommon and I do know that his wife Mary was also the daughter of an earlier 5th Regiment of Dragoons member....yet to find her father (could be Dooling/Doolan??).

But then in another document gives his same place of birth as Drum in Roscommon, his date of death being 1847 when his pension stopped, he was a shoemaker and gave his height etc.

Death certificate won't arrive for a few days yet...I didn't realise that the certificates available online you also have to wait for a few days before they are available!.  Anyway, will have to wait.

If that certificate is the incorrect Francis...then the 1841 Census in Leeds - shows not one of the family, so you may be right in thinking that the family had moved away from the area.. considering at least three or four of their kids ended up being transported - a tad embarrassed?  An even worse scenario is that there was another family with a Francis and Mary Hawkins in Leeds with similar children's names and approximate dates!.

I'll see if I can find the Catholic cemetery you mentioned and check that out if possible.

Cheers,

I've had a look at all the baptisms for the Hawkins family...I do have Ancestry sub, so that was good.  The last bit of info I have for Francis was when his army pay was stopped at his death...which gave the date of death - hence applying for the certificate.

But that item did not say anything about burial.  I wondered whether there was a Chelsea Hospital in Leeds for old soldiers and did that have it's own burial section?? I'll have a bit more of a look.  I also checked the Beckett St burials, but that seems to be C/E.

Should just add that the certificates for overseas are 7 pounds for the digital version and 14 pounds for the postal order.

So can only get them when absolutely ran out of options....LOL!!. ;D

Thank you for your replies.....it looks as though I might have to pay for some info from FindMyPast!.  I've applied for Francis' death certificate - that might (?) add a little more.

The 1841 Census is not showing the younger Hawkins family...most of the elder kids had been transported by then lol!. But still a mystery as to where the others ended up -  including wife Mary!

Again, thanks for your input.

Cheers

Yorkshire (West Riding) / HAWKINS family of Leeds

Good morning

Francis Hawkins bc 1788-1791 in Ireland and enlisted in the 5th Dragoon Guards in 1801 he married Mary (perhaps Doolan/Dooling/Mullins??) (whose father name unknown atm) was also in the 5th Dragoons at an earlier time.

Francis was given a pension at his discharge in 1821.  His death occurred May of 1847 in Leeds.....but cannot find his burial.  Can someone help with the possiblity of Catholic records of that time.  I have found quite a number of C of E...but the Catholic records seem to be few and far between.

A little more information on the family .

The family were Catholics as mentioned - the first couple of children seemed to have been born in Ireland, but the other's in Leeds , and there are a number of the Hawkins family who were transported to Australia...among them a daughter Frances, James, Elisabeth and Jane at the time being!.  Frances (daughter) married into the Gavenlock family in Australia - but prior to that she also had an illegitimate daughter Mary Ann Hawkins/Dixon/Dickson - who was also transported to VDL in 1848 who married into my Foster family in Tasmania.

So any information regarding the Leeds Church records would be appreciated.

Kind regards
