Huntingdonshire Lookup Requests / Re: MARY BRAND born 1802

Sorry, I have not been about for several months due to poor health. If Lustremounter would care to send me an e-mail address I will send a copy of Leonora's picture (You will not be disappointed!).
I do not have much information about her as she is "on the edge" of my tree and I have not got around to extending in that direction yet. I am wracking my memory (which is pretty poor these days) I seem to remember that I have seen details of her family on a web site and certainly I can put you in touch with the family member who sent me her photo.

Tony

Strange comment since I thought I had done that!

Re David's remarks, this is a perfect example of how genealogists seeking to be helpful and putting down such information as is available ie died after such a date, can lead to errors. Three other (distant)family members had taken that Roughwood listing to mean 1912. I had not checked it since my very elderly aunt had told me "Your grandmother died when your mother was born" when what she had meant to say was "Your grandmother died on your mother's birthday" (Albeit 33 years later!) She compounded the misunderstanding by saying "Of course I had to look after your mother when she was a baby" Of such are errors made.

Anyway the shrouds of mystery are now swept away and many thanks to all the people who have contributed.

Thank you very much for the information. Interesting that NONE of the family histories got it right!

My cousin, knowing that I was doing some research into the family history, Has got in touch with the oldest surviving member of the family. Although he is quite old and his memory may not be perfect he has told us that some of the information we were given may not be accurate. So could someone please do a quick look-up for me to sort the following query?

Annie Maria STANDEN (nee SCOTT) was born in Bassingbourn in 1867, she married Harry Standen and had 13 children and died in Bassingbourn, but did she die in 1912 or 1947, or indeed in some other year?

I have pretty well run out of lines of inquiry. I have still got two requests out that have not yet been answered but I don't hold out much hope.

I have, however received a warning about trying to find out about great great grandma Mary Brand and that is I may discover that I am a close relative of either Russell or Jo. Should that happen it might be kinder of you not to tell me ::)

I have been trying to trace back a Charles Brand who was raising a family in Caxton in 1841. He was the right age to be Mary's brother. This led to Brand families in Fulborn and Elsworth. The Elsworth one has a Mary in the generation before and after our Mary, so it is a possibility.

If Mary followed my mother's generation of Standens, half of them did not like their given names and used something different. My grandfather did not like the name my parents gave me - he said, "That's not a boys name, I shall call him Jim." He never called me anything else but Jim.

Thank you for the info, Tempsford. I knew that Abraham went to Arrington as an apprentice, but i did not know that Henry had spent time there.

David, Leonora had a string of names just like William had a string of occupations (including Warehouse manager). I have a picture of Leonora - she was one formidable lady - not one to have a blacksmith as a husband!

I knew they finished up in Cowpen (rather ironic) but I did not know about the time in Derbyshire. If I had my time again I think I might be a "Lustre mounter"!

Yes, that would be right.
Barbara his wife was born in Waldron in 1783.
The children were Frances, Henry, Francis, Elizabeth, Charles and William. Charles married Susan Larkins. The three older boys became blacksmiths and Gamlingay was one of their forges (My grandfather did some of his apprenticeship there, as did a certain Mr Dickerson who you may remember)
William did not become a blacksmith, he married "posh" - Leonora Pandora Randolph, and disappeared to London.

Searching IGI, there are more Brands in Cambs than you could shake a stick at! but not in the areas I'm looking at.

Yes, Elias was a Sergeant Farrier at Waterloo and had come from Sussex to Waresley. You will find Standen blacksmiths all over Hunts and Cambs - they had a lot of sons.
