I've traced Elizabeth's origins, she was born in Waterford, Ireland. I also have her death certificate, with cause of death as "Due to War Operations", whatever that means. Edith Beckinsale claimed the body for burial.

Elizabeth's link to the Beckinsales appears to be that in 1911 she was In Service in Winchester, next door to where Edith Beckinsale, nee Goodall, was in service.

I couldn't find the marriage either and the noteon the '39 register doesn't seem to follow the usual format for marriages, so it could well have been a enumerator's error. I did find an Elizabeth Allen of the right age, working as a house maid in Winchester, born in Waterford, Ireland.

i'm going to try and follow the BRCS route and hope to get some info from their archives.

Bob.

BumbleB, it appears you win again. I dismissed that entry, as the surname was wrong and the WW2 civilian death records say she's the daughter of J H Allen. I think I'll need to look for her marriage and husband's family to sort it ou.

Many thanks for your rapid response.

I'm trying to find information on Elizabeth Allen, born abt 1892, wounded 19/1/1941 at Winters Hill, Durley. She died on 5/2/1941 in the Royal Hants Hospital, Winchester.

Sh was a member of the British Red Cross Society and the daughter of J H Allen, of Winters Hill.

So far, that's all I've been able to find.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks so much for the info. Fred. Povey was the uncle of a neighbour of mine and he is very appreciative of the info you've found.

Flight Lieutenant Frederick Robert Povey, #80867, died in Malta on 1 April 1942, whilst serving with the Technical Branch of the RAFVR. He was involved with airborne radar systems.

The family story is that an allied bomber crash landed and he went out to remove the sensitive radar equipment. Unfortunately, whilst he was doing so, a live bomb, that was still onboard, exploded and he was killed.

I would like to try and verify this story. As a member of the Technical Branch, would he have been assigned to a squadron and if so, which are the most likely ones? I'm quite happy to search through the National Archive records, if someone could point me towards likely squadrons operating out of Malta at that time.
