Cork / Ellen Duggan age 60 at death in 1916
« on: Saturday 08 December 18 19:20 GMT (UK)  »
Hello Cork Board.  I have been transcribing letters for the letters1916 web site and came across very interesting letters regarding an Ellen Duggan who would have been about 60 on her death in the Fermoy hospital in 1916.  The letters detail how she was buried in unconsecrated ground initially as her 'drunken son' would take no responsibility for her body.  Her other son Frank Duggan who was living in America  at the time wrote to the Canon and requested that her body be reburied in the Mitchelstown Parish graveyard.  Amazing resource for the right family under the heading Letter from Rev. J.C. Abbott, 27 May 1916 on the letters1916 web site.  Hope this helps someone.

Have been transcribing, on a site www.duchas.ie a collection of stories collected around 1937/8 by Irish school children from 'older' members of their district.  Have been working on Ballina mainly and some interesting information is contained as it lists the person who 'told' the story, their age and where they lived, very handy for checking years of birth and locations.  You can search by people, place and surnames and most (if not all) counties are covered. Happy hunting.

Mayo / John Casey
« on: Sunday 09 August 15 15:13 BST (UK)  »
A long shot I'm sure but someone may be looking for him!  I have just transcribed a letter from the Alexeevsky Mental Hospital in Poctrayni (Russia?) to Dublin Castle dated 18th Feb 1916 regarding a John Casey.  John is described as being age 32, an unmarried 'Domestic Teacher/Tutor' born in County Mayo Ireland and suffering from 'the Early stages of Brain Weakening'.  He was taken to the hospital by the Chaplain of the English Church and they had no record of any family to support him.  There must be an amazing story here for someone's family tree!

Sligo / Re: McHale, James, looking for birth/marriage/immigration records.
« on: Wednesday 05 August 15 21:11 BST (UK)  »
Hello, If you look at the Griffiths Valuation, printed in 1857, records freely available on askaboutireland.ie the McHale surname is listed in the Sligo Parishes of Castleconor / Kilglass / Kilmoremoy and Kilmacteige, predominately in Castleconor.  So would suggest that you search those parishes.
I've been studying Kilglass parish myself and noticed the surname McHale and Hale appearing in the newly released parish records freely available online at the National Library of Ireland. registers.nli.ie
There is a birth for a James Hale (no Mc)  on 11th March 1830 to a Thomas Hale and Mary McDonald in the Townland of Ballyogan, and previously (didn't note date) a Betty to a Thomas McHale and Sally Burke also Ballyogan townland
There is a marriage of a Patrick McHale to a Mary Carrol? 22 July 1846 at Enniscrone (would be female parish) which in the same area of Sligo, possible relative of your James.
There are not many parish records on the NLI site for Castleconor and I think they are prior to the 1830's, but certainly worth a look.
The 1833 Tithe Applotment Books for Sligo online at National Archives Ireland, nationalarchives.ie,  show two Michael McHale entries in Castleconor Parish.
Hope this gives you a start. Regards Marian

Hi all, have been busy transcribing the WW1 Biscot Camp Luton War Diaries.  There are a few years now loaded onto the website here http://www.worldwar1luton.com/stories/surviving-war-diaries-biscot-camp-luton and more to come as and when.  Might be worth a look as many names mentioned.

Wow, thank you all very much for the information.  It was on an Army Service Record which I have just discovered for my GGGrandfather Michael Boshell so a great step back for me; I have no prior knowledge of the Dublin area as the majority of my line came from the West of Ireland but will have great fun following up your leads.  Thanks again :)

Dublin / Local Knowledge of Dublin?
« on: Tuesday 01 October 13 17:44 BST (UK)  »
I have a birth date of 1816 with a 'born in the Parish of St Mary's  Dublin' statement.  Does anyone with local knowledge know where St Mary's Parish Dublin would have been in 1816/today?
Thanks
