World War Two / RAF WW2 Military License
« on: Friday 05 October 12 20:06 BST (UK)  »
Hi

Recently i searched Ebay and found someone selling a Military Drivers Licence. The License was issued at St Thomas Mount in Madras India. My Grandad Royce Davis served with the Equipment Branch in India. It looks like the License was issued or authorised by a R Davies or Davis. My question is Who was eligable to issue a license? or would the Equipment Branch be the ones who issued Licenses?.

Regards

Mark.

Hi Hugh

Yes it is the CR 10 index card, on the photo is his Identity certification number 383162, unfortunately for me my index card does not give me much more other than his identity and discharge numbers. I had a kind contact who visited the Southampton Archives for me and she was kind enough to get me a copy of this index, only downside is it does not give ships he served on to trace his history. I know because of my great Aunts birth certificate that he was on S S Wenning in 1918,under the word S S Wenning is NO 39, No 39 is not the official number of the vessel as of the national archives website.

At the moment with using the CLIP website i can only research agreements before 1913,i can't find him on the 1911 census,he is in the merchant navy abroad as of what my great grandmother put on the census. I have a gap that i can't fill in between those dates.

Hi

I recently received my Great Granddads merchant Navy Index Card, the index Card came with a photo and his Identity Certificate number and discharge A Number.

Where do i go in my research from here? The index did not give any ships he served on even though i know he served on S S Wenning,

But the index card does have printed numbers at the bottom which could be ship numbers, one line reads: (32281) Wt.20167-23 100m 8/18 av.P (503)
Is this line at the bottom of the index a ships official number and measurements.

Any advice please

Regards

Mark Davis
