The Lighter Side / Re: Who has a surprise connection to an historical figure?

I am distantly related to Jane Lane (1626 - 1689), who helped the future Charles II escape after the Battle of Worcester - a connection which I wasn't aware of until I began to volunteer at a National Trust property where Charles hid...

And I recently discover that Ronnie Reed, who was a member of MI5 and ran double agents during the Second World War (including Agent Zigzag),is also related - a fifth cousin.

Ah, I was on Ancestry Pro (one of the online resources kindly provided by my local library).

That's exactly what I was expecting to find.  Many thanks!

Census and Resource Discussion / 1939 Register: column headings
« on: Tuesday 30 June 20 20:45 BST (UK)  »
I've found Great Great Aunt Rose in an institution in the 1939 Register.

Can anyone throw some light on the column headings?  Column 5 reads "O, V, S, P or I"  (Rose is recorded as I)

We are still wondering if it is possible to waltz, quickstep and tango whilst remaining 1 metre apart.   ;D;D

Mike, and Mazi.

The back sway in the tango could be particularly challenging!

(A move known to my parents, who taught ballroom dancing, as "Dip your head in my cocoa")

A haircut not had mine done since December. I had surgery in the new year followed by lockdown so I was unable to get it done.

The week before lockdown started I was thinking about having my hair cut ( for the first time in ten years), but I don't think I'll bother!

Well, as the Significant Other was identified as high-risk at the start, we'll still be keeping ourselves very much to ourselves.

At the moment I'm trying to work out if and when our Local History Group can meet again - most of our members are elderly, and the room we normally use isn't very big, so one metre distancing may prove a problem.

I'm very much looking forward to buying a decent pair of shoes, as my favourite pair have collapsed: and a pint in a riverside pub.

Things that I hope won't change:  during lockdown I managed to persuade the afore-mentioned Local History Group to start a monthly newsletter (I've been pushing for this for two years!) and I'm hoping we can continue with this once we're back to normal.

If I have the right 1891 entry - birthplace is Brewood - not Cannock ???

Brewood was a sub-district of Cannock.

The registration areas in this area were odd:  my father was born, as far as everyone was concerned, in Wolverhampton, but his birth certificate shows Registration District Cannock, in the sub-district of Brewood.

Family History Beginners Board / Re: "Boarding out" children from workhouses

Thanks for all your help!

I've searched the births at Northwich workhouse but there's no record of a Martha Ann Harding, and as she was fostered I'm not sure if this was her birth name, or one given to her by her adoptive parents. Will have to check the account records to see if there's mention of her parents there.

I'm guessing it would be common for a couple to name an adoptive baby, as it looks like she was only about a year old when baptised - it's also complicated by having 2 different dates of birth. Her gravestone gives her birthday as 17th April 1881, but throughout her life she gave it as 9th October 1882. According to older family members she never mentioned being adopted, so I'm not sure if she even knew.

I wonder whether 9 October 1882 was when she was adopted? It may be that her foster/adoptive parents regarded the date when she became a member of their family as her "birthday".
