A bit of a long shot but was her maiden name Williams?  If so have you seen the probate record for Emma Matilda Williams, probate 12 Aug 1859, died 5 November 1855 in Boulogne.  Probably not her as it says she was a spinster but I was drawn to the French connection.

Image of Joseph Jefferson’s baptism confirms he was the illegitimate son of Jane.

Kate,

I think you need to have made three posts, might only be two now, before you can send personal messages. Just reply to this and you should be good to go.

Good luck to you all, fingers crossed it all works out for you.

Hi and welcome to Rootschat

I did a search of newspapers and found a snippet about his death but sadly no information on funeral.

Can post details if it is of any interest.

P.S. Just found a thank you message from his daughter for floral tributes in paper but still no mention of the funeral!

Hi Chris,

I am definitely no expert on banns but I do have a very similar situation in my tree see

In my case definitely the same couple.

Besides the delay, as the banns have to be read in the church where the marriage takes place I don’t think the earlier banns would be valid in any case.

I’m pretty hopeless with military research although there as other Rootschatters that are really good.

This advice on the National Archives site might help

I did have a Quick Look on Ancestry and FindMyPast without success but that may well be down to my lack of expertise

Was Harold junior ever in the military (thinking WW2) if so might this have been when he obtained the birth certificate he always used and could his service record provide any more clues?
