Wiltshire Lookup Requests / Re: NOYES family in Burbage, Wiltshire county
« on: Tuesday 11 May 21 12:50 BST (UK)  »
I realise this maybe a shot in the dark given that the last post on this thread was in 2012. I am wondering whether Sarah Hope holds the key to my 4xGreat Grandfather. My line of Noyes seem to swap between the surname Noyes and Hope. 'Goodland' - you mentioned that Sarah bore Thomas Hope seven children - I have only found 6 of them. Do you happen to know if they had a son called Charles around 1793? The only Charles Noyes I have found was born to James and Alice Noyes but can't see a connection to the surname Hope with these parents.

Alderney, Guernsey, Jersey, Sark / Re: mary bird born c1815 guernsey
« on: Friday 30 July 10 14:49 BST (UK)  »

I have a copy of the marriage parish entry for Mary Ann Bird as I am also researching (unsuccessfully!) this line.

Date of marriage: 28th August 1837 at the Parish Church in Newark.
Mary Ann Bird is described as being a spinster of full age no profession is listed.
George Cobb is described as a bachelor and a labourer. Both were resident in Newark.
Mary's father is given as William Bird, profession - labourer.
George's father was William Cobb, profession - Brewer
The marriage was witnessed by John Cobb and Christine Cobb.
None of the party were able to sign their names.

Not too many details although I have deduced from this that at this point in time William Bird was not deceased.

Hope this helps.

World War Two / Re: Photo of soldier in need of identification

Thank you Scrimnet. I'm amazed that you can tell so much from the photo.

This has thrown me completely as I was always told this was John Toyne my gr.grandfather!!
There is something to the saying "Ignorance is bliss"  :-\
Yet another challenge for the family tree.

Thanks again...

Hello.

Can anyone shed any light on the attached photo. I am trying to establish which part of the services/regiment my gr.grandfather served in.
The photograph is of John Toyne born Birmingham 1888. He was still living in Birmingham, Warwickshire at the time of the 1911 census.

Any information would be greatfully received.

Tina :-)

Warwickshire / Re: 8.5 Bullring Birmingham 1901

Thanks for this..  I hadn't considered that it might be a commercial property. I had thought that it might have been some sort of institution as  there were so many individuals listed against the same address.

One other thing that I have just noticed is that everyone listed against 8.5 Bullring is male - which is a little strange!

The 1901 census was taken on Sunday 31st March - i'm wondering whether 8.5 Bullring may have been some sort of bar/pub...

I have located my gr.gr.gr.grandfather (David Ball born 1844) listed as a lodger at number 8 + half Bullring Birmingham in the 1901 census. There are 100 others listed at the same premises with assorted occupations. Does anyone know what this building was? or how I can find out? I've looked at the enumerators description but it doesn' give any detail of the building, I've also tried 'google'.

Thanks for any help.

Ireland / Re: Ann Wollastone 1815
« on: Thursday 16 April 09 18:58 BST (UK)  »
Thank you so much for looking at this. It does look as if I can rule out the surname Wollastone for my Ann.

My Thomas and Ann had, I think, only one child. Mary Ann Evans born Birmingham 1841 (2 births registered in Birmingham). It looks as if birth certificate is my next step for finding out Ann's maiden name. Mary Ann's marriage certificate didn't give me any clues other than confirming Thomas as the father.

Where did you find the marriage information for the other Thomas and Ann?Just wondering if its a site that I haven't found yet!!

Thanks again
Tina.

Warwickshire / Re: Richard Street, Birmingham - 1901 census?
« on: Friday 10 April 09 17:07 BST (UK)  »
In 1911 he was a Street Hawker on Steel House Lane. I assume that 10 years previous (aged 13) he would probably still be at school.

I have tried every variation of Toyne (Toin, Foyne, Foin, even sounding out with a Dudley type accent!) without success.

I'll definitely order the birth certificate - at least I should then have three names to look at!

Thanks again for eveyone's help/suggestions.
