Staffordshire / Re: Wilfred Henry Cope (1905-1996) Born Ipstones

Thanks the the tips :)

I've contacted a few people via Ancestry who have relevant people on their public trees - one person has details of his nephew for example.

Since my OP I've realised that the Cope family of Ipstones, are as numerous as my own in Cheadle! My research is more focused on Wilf himself, rather than the extended family - although I have gathered a reasonable amount of information if its needed!

I've had incredible luck on the forum before, so my fingers are crossed!

Staffordshire / Wilfred Henry Cope (1905-1996) Born Ipstones

Hello,

I'm doing a little bit of research on Wilfred (known as Wilf) on behalf of a colleague. If anyone has a connection to him could you please send me a message?

Here's some background for those who have clicked on the thread and are curious :)

Wilfred was born at Ipstones in 1905, his father Henry was an electrician and moved the family around quite a lot. They were in Yorkshire when Wilf's brother Charles was born in 1907 (Henry himself had been born in Bradford) and appear there on the 1911 census.

Information I've received from someone who knew Wilf later in live, has the family living in Glasgow for a time as well as Beverley in Yorkshire. Wilf was an avid chess player and is believed to have been a member of the Beverley Chess Club.

By the time of the 1939 register Wilfred and his brother Charles are back in Staffordshire, around Cheddleton which is where Wilf lived in the 1950s. Later Wilf moved to Kingsley which is where he passed away in 1996. His brother seems to have had a family, but died young - his family may have settled in Leek.

If any of that rings a bell, let me know.

Regards,
Mike

Staffordshire / Thomas Bakewell (1761-1835)

Hello,

I'm just wondering if anyone is researching Thomas and his family?

I've no connection to him myself, but I'm considering putting together an article about him for a local publication. I've done a bit of research, but have a few questions!

Now added a bit of detail :)

Thomas was baptised at Kingstone near Uttoxeter. His uncle John Chadwick ran a private mental ayslum at Abbots Bromley (possibly first at Grindon), as a child he spent a lot of time with him.

As an adult he went into the textile industry, before opening is own private asylum in 1808 which was near Stone.

Mike

Thank you very much :)

I don't actually think I'd tracked him down on the 1891 census. Given it's proximity to Finsbury Park the family must have stayed in that area a while. Their son Alphonso drowned in the river there in 1887, that was the first exact date I had for them in London.

Thanks for the address suggestion, it certainly sounds possible.

Robert Plant (1840-1902)

Robert was born in Cheadle (Staffordshire) into a mining family and aged 23 took over the family colliery business following the death of his father and short spell working with his eldest brother James (my direct ancestor). A few years later he established a larger colliery company and set about becoming a big fish in a little pond! He was very successful for about a decade then around 1876 he invested a small fortune into a colliery that failed heavily. He was able to keep himself afloat through creditors but in 1881, after investing in a Cheadle railway scheme, he was was declared bankrupt and the majority of his assets were seized.

It's a little unclear as to why and how, but his entire family move with him to London. Letters to the local newspaper show a different address nearly every time which I've always found strange. The Stamford Hill address was a new one to me and was contained in a bundle of documents related to a colliery here in Cheadle and also a new (and ultimately successful) railway scheme, although like many small lines now long gone.

He would eventually end up in Fulham where he died having contracted TB. His body was returned to Cheadle using the railway he helped create.

I'm not sure if that's of any use, but it was fun to write!

Hello,

I've recently come across some paperwork related to an uncle who moved to London around 1885. A letter he wrote back to Cheadle in 1887 has a letterhead reading:

The Harwoods,
Stamford Hill,
London, N.

I wondered if anyone had any information relating to 'The Horwoods' ?

Mike

Hello,

I'm not sure if you're still looking for information, but you may be looking at George Lees(e) who was on Queen Street in 1911.

Thanks for the additional information John, Sarah Elizabeth marring William Johnson is especially interesting as in 1911 they're living in Tean. Previously I'd thought that all of Robert and Martha's children had made the move to London, this development means there may still be descendants in the area.

Thanks again.

Mike
