The Common Room / Death Certificates
« on: Tuesday 07 July 09 15:58 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,

Sadly, a member within my family tree took their own life some years ago.

Upon purchasing this certificate, I have been informed that between the actual death and the issuing of the death certificate, there is an eleven month gap due to what seems to me to be a late inquest.

I have always been informed that a death certificate is required before a person can be buried, however I know that said family member was buried about a week after their death.

Can anyone inform me of how burial is achieved without the presence of a death certificate?

Thanking you all in advance.

Kind regards,

Hi FS

The year was 1892 and my great grandfather was 12. Both of his father and mother had died at this point (1883 & 1891 respectively), but I believe he was in the care of his stepfather.

Thank you and kind regards,

The Common Room / "Boy's W.H."
« on: Tuesday 02 June 09 11:16 BST (UK)  »
Hi everyone,

I recently found the school record for my great grandfather.

Upon reason for leaving his school, it says 'gone to boy's W.H.'.

I can only think that the W.H. could stand for workhouse.

Can anyone else offer what these initials could stand for?

Thanking you kindly,

Hello Tegan,

My father was born on the Stradey Castle Estate in 1922, his parents lived at the Farm Cottage on the Estate. my grandfather James Lewis was the Butler at the Castle for many years. I went down to Pwll four or five years ago and met Sir David and he showed around the castle and his lovely wife showed me the grounds and the cottage were my father was born.

Ho ho ho  :)

Can anyone tell me where the christening and school records are held for such places as St. Silas Church, St. Andrew's Church, St. John's Church Newington, Lincoln Street School and Craven Street School? Would these be held at Beverley or elsewhere?

Thanking you all in advance.

Best wishes,

Sgt Tollers, are we talking about the same place???  It's the most uncomfortable place to work in - the microfiche readers are at a height which forces you to stand, something I can't do for long periods, and the indexing lapsed some time ago.  It'll be great to have a new place with good facilities.  Mind you, the staff were great.

Well, I was referring to the actual atmosphere more than anything. I must agree that it's very cramped in there and getting too many people in at once can cause havoc. I hope at the new place that the readers that they have for the census returns/newspapers are all electronic because the manual ones cause severe crampage!

Kind regards,

Yorkshire (East Riding & York) / Gravestone Inscriptions for Northern Cemetery
« on: Wednesday 26 November 08 19:36 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

In the Local Studies Library in Hull City Centre, I'm aware that they have books relating to the inscriptions on the gravestone in nearly all of the cemeteries, but for some reason, Northern Cemetery is not included. Does anyone know why and if there is a book out there for these also?

Kind regards,
Sgt Tollers

I've heard that they are closing on Christmas Eve, re-opening at the new site in Autumn next year?

I don't understand why they have to move it really. It's such a wonderful place to go to; the look and feel of the place is so relaxing and comforting and affords such an excellent place to study in.
