Moray (Elginshire) / Re: Janet CALLUM or GRANT
« on: Tuesday 23 June 20 15:22 BST (UK)  »
Hi Colin:  No, I can't find a marriage for Alexander and Janet but that wouldn't show their parents anyway.  Usually just says "so and so contracted, etc.."

I have however, followed up on John Grant from Edinkillie as father of Janet.  SP shows a John Grant born in 1725 with parents All. Grant (Allan/Allistair?) and WAIT FOR IT - mother Janet Callum from Rafford (don't know how close that would be to Forres/Edinkillie where the later family lived).  If these are the right people, then Janet Callum would be Janet Grant/Callum's grandmother.  Looks promising but no way, of course, to prove its them.

Will pursue it further - at least it may be a step in the right direction.

Thanks for your help.

Moray (Elginshire) / Janet CALLUM or GRANT

I have a Robert Callum Smith, born 1795 in Forres.  Parents shown as Alexander Smith (1752-1837 - his father was John) and Janet Grant or Callum (c.1761-1831).

I'm trying to trace the mother's line. Scotland's People shows a Janet Grant baptised Oct. 1761 with Father Donald Grant.  There is also a Janet Callum shown as baptised Sept. 1760 with father Donald Callum.

Robert had 5 siblings - John, Alexander, James, Christian and Jessie (no Donald?). Mother used Grant on John, James and Christian's birth registration.  Used Callum for Alexander's and Grant or Callum for Jessie and Robert's.  I've verified this on Moray Libindex and Scotland's People.  Any ideas how to go further back as I'm hesitant to pursue Donald Grant or Donald Callum.  I haven't tried to track the siblings to see if they had any sons called Donald.  Any other ideas?

Help would be appreciated.

Talking about pronunciations I once had dealings with someone called Featherstonehaugh (surname). It was apparently pronounced Fanshaw.  Imagine going though life explaining that!

Hi Malky:  Yes, I did notice the original posting date but thought I'd give it a try anyway.  Not really expecting a response but you never know.  I found it while Googling the Eliza Forbes.

Just found your message re James Smith, Captain of Eliza Forbes.  I have a Captain James Smith on my tree who I believe was Master of the Eliza Forbes.  He had a son names Forbes Smith who was also a seaman who died in Taganrog, Russia of Cholera.  If you're still interested, I'd be happy to hear from you.

Moray (Elginshire) / Ships Captains/Ship Masters
« on: Friday 19 July 19 17:28 BST (UK)  »
I have several ancestors listed as Ship Captains and Ship Masters in the Banff and Moray areas in the 1800's.  Does anyone know how I could find out which ships they served on and where they sailed to?  I know the son of one of them (Forbes Smith) was a seaman and died at 24 in 1871 in Taganrog, Russia of Cholera.  His family was from Kinloss, Moray.  The father died at sea in 1854.
Moray Libindex gave me lots of information but no mention of ships names or destinations.

Any help would be much appreciated.

No, Duncan's parents were Hugh McIntyre/Katherine McArthur.  His grandparents were John McIntyre/Anne Campbell.

Family Search also have an Ann Campbell born April 28, 1724 and another born August 27, 1727 with parents Colin Campbell/Elizabeth all in Inveraray.  Don't forget, John and Anne had a daughter Elizabeth also.  I think Duncan's wife (Sarah McCallum) was from Inveraray.

Just took a look at my McIntyre chart.  Colin Campbell McIntyre mentioned above also had a son and a grandson called Colin Campbell McIntyre.  So, it looks likely that there was a Colin Campbell somewhere further back, unless they just liked the name!
