The Mary J(osephine) Liptrot that died in 1919, that we thought might have been Walter's first wife (my Gt Grandmother) appears not to be, her death cert lists her name as Mary Jane Liptrot, b. 1874 - 6 years too early.

Back to square one to try and find My Gt Grandmothers's death certificate!

B. 1880 Chester Castle.  Mary Josephine Mitchell.  Father Bartholomew (Irish descent), Mother Ann.  Orphaned young.
Census 1891 and 1901 with Margaret Tootill, guardian.
m. 1906 John Sheldon
m. 1910 Walter Liptrot
1917 - goes to prison for a month, Liverpool.  Walter doesn't want to know.
1919 - my Grandmother and 2 sisters adopted off to different people by Walter.  no mention of mary on birth cert.

Who knows if she married again?  Left the country, etc.  Where do I start??

Still haven't received the certificates, unusual.  They were ordered on the 24th, and supposed to have been sent 1st class on the 1st.  Darned postal strikes.

Anyway, I have worked out the relationship between me and your kids - we're Half 2nd Cousins!

Cheers ... L&W.

Was hoping to receive Walter's death certificate this morning, but nothing has come through yet.

Would be interesting to find out where he was serving.

I looked up mustard gas, it was first used by the German Army in 1917, which is strange as he was discharged in 1914 with Lupus (neck).  There are other causes of Lupus though.

It was the 17th - from his Birth Cert, yes - in Pemberton, Lancs.  I remember visiting my Grandparents on Pemberton Rd, Wigan funnily enough!

Well, well done!  it must be Arundel St, don't you think?!

It is definitely 28 Handel St ... the same address as where my Grandmother was born in 1915 and where they lived, it is on her Birth certificate.  It is/was in Toxteth, Liverpool.  Probably long redeveloped by now.   There is a Handel Ct around there now, but this is a new build.

My Grandma's sister was again born where they lived - in the Coach & Horses Inn, Handbridge, Chester.  This was in 1913.

Mary was sentenced to a month's imprisonment in 1918, convicted of stealing a bottle of whiskey and a bottle of rum.  Through this conviction, it came to light that her first husband was still alive.  Walter knew of this marriage, the earlier husband (John Sheldon, a Footman and then Private Sheldon) didn't know of the second until it came to court.  Mary had apparently been very straight until 1917, and committed her crime at the end of the year when she went to Liverpool, where she undertook service on licensed premises.  She had been orphaned when very young, taken into care by Mrs Tootle.  With respect to the bigamy, it was noted that her only crime was to the law, she had done no harm to anyone and was to be treated with the utmost leniency.  The judge accepted what had been put infront of him, but could not pass the offence over entirely.
... snippets from the Chester County Herald, 14 June 1918 (the week of the court case).

My grandmother was adopted in Oct 1919.  I will find out soon when/why Mary Mitchell died.

I told all of this to my Uncle tonight, he'd given me most of the memories that he had from his Mum.  He commented that back in those days it was quite hard to get divorced and that it was pretty expensive.  Perhaps this was the case?

Walter Liptrot was 10 years younger than Mary Mitchell, however on their marriage cert, they have put themselves down as 2 years apart!

I have found that I already have B&M certs for Walter, will order the D cert.  I have BMD certs for his father, B&M for his grandfather and B for his gt Grandfather.  Assuming that they are correct.  I dug it out a couple of years ago and went on a hunch, now that his father has been confirmed as being Richard and not Walter, it fits perfectly!

Will also order Mary Mitchells death cert - I have BMM for her already, and BMD for her father, and B for her mother.

It should already all be there in my Ancestry tree.
