Dorset Lookup Requests / Re: Marina/Mary Ann Sartin Corscombe
« on: Monday 17 October 11 20:47 BST (UK)  »
Hi Claire/Wozzle
Sorry for the delay I didn't think a reply would be so quick --- and detailed. Thank you very much! The information I have gathered is rather jumbled but a lot of your research fits. I believe that this lady was named Mary Ann and was known by that name for a number of years. For some reason she is known as Marina by the time the banns were read in 1855 and for the actual wedding. I had all the names of Marina/Charles children (1861 census) except for Emma. I also have the names Charles, Charlotte, Fred, Samuel and Walter. It seems that this is the lady! I'm still a little puzzled, was Marina the daughter of James and Jane or James and Martha? Thanks -- I had an idea that Marina/Mary Ann were one and the same person. Maybe she changed her name because she was a singer? Thanks again --- very grateful.

Grateful for information on Mary Ann (Marina?) Sartin. Believe she was the daughter of James Sartin and Jane Park. Married Charles Russell. She was a well known entertainer and lived in Corscombe.
Thank You.

Hi Mim,
Thank you very much for your continued interest. I have photos of my Mum and grandmother in the cemetary that you mentioned --- and I have been there myself(2009). I found the grave of Edith and Ernie (buried together)! I failed to find the grave of my great grandmother - Emma Pitchford - because I had forgotten to take the photos with me! I plan to return soon because I live in South Wales, so it's not a very long journey. I have found out a little about the family, and you have helped me a great deal, but I am still curious about exactly who lived in Green End. I believe that it was probably the batchelor Ernie and his sister Edith. I would really like to know if their parents - my great grandparents lived there before (or at one time with) them? I visited the house in Hereford Street as a child. Edith lived there. I stood outside it again in 2009 -- very frustrating! I walked down Hereford Street (away from the town) in order to find addresses that come up in census documents. There are two addresses where the Pitchfords lived --- but the old terraced houses seem to have been demolished? Anything else that you can find out for me will be much appreciated. As you can tell - I have found out quite a lot, but it is niggling me regarding who lived in Green End exactly and whether the house was owned/rented by Ernie and Edith or whether their parents had moved there from one of the now demolished houses in Hereford Street. Thanks a lot for all your help  and interest. Best Wishes.

Hi,
My father was Harry Gunter but he served in ww2. However, he had an uncle who might have served in ww1 ---- also Harry Gunter, I believe. This Harry Gunter later went to live in America. Don't know if this is helpful in some small way?

Hi Mimthemuz,
Thank you very much. This is clearly the same Edith! I remember visiting Green End as a child and I returned last year, hoping to jog my memory. I couldn't remember which house it was and I am not sure exactly who lived there when I was a child. I believe that it could have been Edith and her brother Ernie. I am also wondering if their parents lived at Green End and they might have inherited the house. I have another address for the Pitchford family, again in Hereford Street, but down the other end and I couldn't find the house so I wondered if the house might have been knocked down? Any information you can give me will be gratefully received! Helyg

Hi suz,
Thank you once again for your advice. Can I just clarify ---- where would I buy credits from? Do I need to do this? Where is the best place to seek free information. Apologies --- still a bit confused about all these sources and over where money is best spent. Before I go --- in your opinion, what is the best way of recording all the information I gather? Regards. helyg

Hello suzard and keyboard86. Thank you so much for all the time and trouble you have taken to find all this information. I wonder if I can bother you a little further? I have been looking at maps showing Presteigne and the surrounding area. I can't find Nantmel, Llanbdarntawr. I was wondering if you could tell me where I could look? (I can feel a visit coming on!)  I would also love to know when (if) Emma and David show up on census for Tredegar because I believe they moved there from Presteigne. Can I get back further than 1841 by looking on www.familysearch.org and/or FreeBMD?  Thank You both very much for all your help! helyg
