Oxfordshire Lookup Requests / Re: 1861 census lookup please Whitchurch
« on: Friday 06 November 15 14:58 GMT (UK)  »
thank you for explaining Liz .

I think had there not been pretty conclusive detail in the transcription I would have checked the image but the birth dates and birth places and occupations and census area all matched so I was almost certain it was the same family especially given the ridiculous name which couldn't be found anywhere else in any record source.

I am running perilously close to the end of my subscription with FindMyPast and I cannot afford another until sometime next year so I am using every lookup very sparingly at the moment .I have over 15x other images I'd like to check but simply cannot afford it at the moment.

i hope this explains why I did not also check the image in this instance.
Did you look at my Whitchurch record ?  there is a lot of lookups in that lot  ::)

Thank you all for your lookups and help I couldn't have got as far as I have without Rootschat members help.
Here is what I have recorded so far up to 1871.
The top line is my late Mothers  direct paternal line and I haven't yet had a chance to investigate where there might be connections to all the other Whitchurch families

When it is finished I intend to list all of it so that it might be of help to present and future researchers of the Whitchurch line

If you look at the actual image, it is Whitchurch. So, yes, it is a FindMyPast transcription error, so best to tell them.

Out of interest Ancestry indexed it correctly as Whitchurch.

thanks Liz unfortunately I cannot afford a subscription to both FindMyPast and ancestry so I tend to rely on FindMyPast and Freebmd freecen
I suppose I should have checked ancestry but to be honest it didn't occur to me

Do you not look at the original image to assess whether the transcription is accurate?
In this particular case it wouldn't have been possible because the FindMyPast database is based on their transcribed records (which are incorrectly transcribed,) not the original image ...which is why is why it was  not possible to find any reference to the family on FindMyPast.

in desperation I tried searching for just them in 1861 census by their  christian names and birth dates and found  this
RG09 768 89 27
Could this be them mistranscribed ? Its a very strange name
Henry Whihharde 1804 cordwainer born Aylesbury
Mary                   1804                 Born Abingdon Bucks
Richard               1843 cordwainer Oxford
James  Simmonds 1821 Wifes Brother ?

looks highly likely ,should I try to get the entry corrected on FindMyPast ?

Trish :)

Crikey Trish you have been really busy haven't you ! ;D That is a huge amount of information for me thank you

I had the Thomas Whitchurch 1841 but couldn't find anything of Thomas and Ann in 1851 anywhere, so you and Cathy have made that link positive which ties together a lot of seperate Whitchurch families I have found .

Now I need to go through all the Whitchurch and Parkins records you have dug up for me and see how it fits to my Whitchurch tree. I'm going to be busy writing all this up tonight..
Thank you Trish I'm very grateful for all the work that you have put into this for me.
 :)
