Technical Help / Re: Link to PayPal gives blank screen
« on: Monday 06 April 20 16:30 BST (UK)  »
I believe (hope!) I have now solved this problem. I tried everything that was suggested by PayPal and others, such as deleting the cache, cookies, history, ad-blockers etc but nothing seemed to work. I eventually pinned it down to my McAfee virus software which had added its WebAdvisor extension to Firefox. When I disabled that the link to PayPal worked OK. I was a little uneasy removing this useful security check so I enabled the McAfee extension again just to see what happened. Lo and behold I could still access Paypal! The solution to my problem seems to be to disable and then re-enable that McAfee extension. Anyway, I'll see how it works out but meanwhile thank you all for your help.

Hi

What was the actual message obtained on the FireTablet?

R

Thanks for replying. The message I received was :-

"There was an error processing your payment. Please try again."

Trystan : Thanks for the link to PayPal support. I've sent them details of my problem and I'm now waiting for their response. Apparently they are very busy, so I could have a long wait!

LizzieW : A reasonable suggestion but I have checked and all my cards are current. Thanks anyway.

Technical Help / Link to PayPal gives blank screen
« on: Monday 30 March 20 15:34 BST (UK)  »
I have used PayPal for many years to make online payments so that I don't need to disclose my card details. Recently this has failed to work on every occasion and I have been left with no option but to enter card details. On selecting PayPal for payment it just presents me with a blank screen and this happens with both Firefox and Edge browsers. Having Googled the problem the most likely cause seemed to be the disabling of pop-ups but enabling pop-ups made no difference. I was convinced it had to be due to something on my PC but when I tried on my Amazon Fire tablet that too failed, but with a failure message and not a blank screen.

I'd be interested to hear if anyone else has had this problem and any ideas as to what might be causing it.  Thank you.

Thanks for confirming that Sarah. I won't in fact try again as that particular thread has now finished and it would only confuse people. It must have just been a hiccough in the system. As long as I know for the future that attachments can be used on The Common Room, which seemed to be the most appropriate board for my general family history query. Thanks again for your help.

Hi Sarah
I was replying to an item on The Common Room. It allowed me to select an attachment but when I clicked on "Post" nothing happened so I thought there might be something wrong with the attachment. Are attachments not allowed in The Common Room?

This attachment would not work on another board.

The Common Room / Re: Baptism surname not the parents surname

I haven’t checked as I don’t have FindMyPast but it isn’t incorrect if it is as you describe - unless the transcript shows the child with mother’s name rather than correct surname. When transcribing, I think, the transcriber has to write what the record shows.

It most certainly is incorrect as the transcription gives the father's last name as "Roope", which is the mother's maiden name. Obviously the transcriber was as confused as I was and that is why I initiated this thread.

Thank you for putting me right on that. Like I said earlier, this is my first venture into my Irish family history and I made the same mistake as the transcriber. I will now report that to FindMyPast as an incorrect transcription and wait and see what happens. Thank you all again.
