The Common Room / Term in Tithe Apportionments
« on: Monday 18 March 19 14:10 GMT (UK)  »
While looking at an ancestors land occupancies in the Derbyshire village of Tideswell I have encountered a term which I cannot find defined in m,y reference books or Google.

It appears to read Mesnestripes or Mesne stripes.

I wonder if anyone can confirm the meaning please?

I wasn't suggesting that Rangitiki might be F 17!

I was agreeing that crossing the line ceremonies took place in WW2!

In the book, based on the author’s diaries, he records left Freetown 21 Aug 1941 and line crossing ceremony was 3-4 days later en route for Durban.
Second ceremony was on 19 September after leaving Durban en route for Aden.
This ties in nicely with data in your link to the Arnold Hague database.

This is a replacement post as first attempt seems to have vanished into the ether.

I've just finished reading 'Till we meet again' by Bert Martin and Hazel Spencer. Included in the book are accounts of two crossing the line ceremonies aboard the trooper Rangitiki in 1941 while en route for Egypt.

They are 'Herring Lassies' , many of whom were Scottish who followed the herring fishing fleets down the east coast up until the 1960s.

They gutted and packed the herring in barrels shown in the background.

The style of dress (I'm no expert!)  suggests sometime after WW2 to me.

A friend from my family history group has contacted me to tell me that his father Flight Sergeant Ken Hillier served as a tail gunner in 620 Squadron.

Ken contributed to the book  'Stirlings in Action with the Airborne Forces' by Dr Dennis J Williams published by Sword and Pen 2007. Amongst the many photos of 620 Squadron's machines is one of Ken Hillier.

I have used this list for US Army and Air Force units in East Anglia so it may be of help

US Army/Army Air Force: Units from UK Station List
www.ddaymuseum.co.uk/documents/US-units-March-44.doc

You will get a Word document to download. You have to enable editing and you can then use Word's search facility.

I search by county as some place names aren't obvious!
