« on: Sunday 30 October 11 12:51 GMT (UK)  »
Any advice appreciated. I have traced Hardy Family Back to William Hardy B 1751 M Ann Skelton, all at Thornton Dale . Before that bit sketchy as odd ones mentioned earlier but no link.  Not sure how to progress this . Plenty of Hardy's  round about in nearby villages . Any ideas ?

Many Thanks

World War Two / RAF Service record query WW2
« on: Friday 09 September 11 18:50 BST (UK)  »
Can anyone help ? Does the date in the "Date of movement "  column in the service record indicate when  the date of the movement  actually happened or when the instruction for the movement  was made ?  EG  DOM 17/11/45 3 Release Emarkation Centre , Worli Bombay , so did they leave  for Worli on that day or merely receive the Air Movement Authority Form on that date with a view to the order being carried out shortly afterwards. ?

Would appreciate any help with this.

Many Thanks

Nick

World War Two / RAF . Need to get back home.

Hi I'd value anyone's opinion. Have my Dad Stuck in Singapore in 1945. His service record states Date of Movement 17/11/45 to 3 Release embakation Centre  , Worli , Bombay.. First does this mean that is when he left Singapore ? . If so I have checked all the ships leaving for Bombay a week either side . Only one ship leaves 17/11/45 and this is for Calcutta so in this case he would have to travel by train to Worli Bombay . The only ship going to Bombay in the period leaves 13/11/45 but I'm not sure whether this is really feasible as it would mean leaving before he had authority to do so. What does anyone  think ? Is this possible ? Post Japanese surrender, these were chaotic times in Singapore so maybe it was ?

Any opinions appreciated .

Many thanks

World War Two / RAF Operation Zipper
« on: Sunday 26 June 11 11:06 BST (UK)  »
It appears from my research that my Dads Squadron number 273 were split after Rangoon was taken . 10 spitfires left via Bangkok to go to Saigon , the rest of the Squadron left with operation Zipper via the Malacca straits to go to Singapore RAF Tengah. Does anyone know how many spitfires were in a squadron on average ?

Thanks

World War Two / RAF SE Asia there and back again.
« on: Sunday 19 June 11 10:35 BST (UK)  »

Can anyone help ? By September 1945 my Dad was at RAF Tengah Singapore . He was with 273 Squadron . 10 Spitfies went off to Saigon but he remained at Singapore. His Service records state that his next date of movement was 17/11/45 to 3 REC ( 3 Release Embarkation Centre at Worli Bombay) Does anyone know how I can check out troopships he could have left on . I do know City of Canterbury left that day for Calcutta .I was thinking he may have travelled by train to Worli from Calcutta as when he went out he travelled Worli Calcutta on way to Chittagong . Any comments would been very appreciated.

World War Two / RAF BURMA. A question of time.
« on: Wednesday 08 June 11 19:45 BST (UK)  »
In May 1945 my Dad was with 273 Squadron in Mingaladon ( Rangoon ) until September of that year . Official records state that the Squadron moved very briefly to Don Muang ( Bangkok ) in September before moving to Tan Son Nhut  ( Saigon ) all in September. However , My fathers correspondance for October 1945 has the Squadron at RAF Tengah , Singapore .

This is a big ask , but what does anybody else make of this ? Does anybody have any insight into this  ?

Many Thanks.

« on: Sunday 05 June 11 22:33 BST (UK)  »
Hope someone can help.
My Dad was in 169 Squadron from Jan to July 1944 until being sent to SE Asia. He was a photographer . In Burma he was with a Squadron of Spitfires , processing the film . 169 flew Mosquito's .  Does anyone know if  he would have flown in the Mosquito 's as a photographer ?

All comments welcome, many thanks.
