Durham / Sunderland near the Sea, monumental inscriptions
« on: Monday 21 July 14 19:01 BST (UK)  »
I am looking for a monumental inscription for Hugh Miller.  He was married to Elizabeth Taylor in Sunderland in 1796 and had a daughter Mary Ann who was married from Sunderland in 1819.  The Newcastle Magazine for 1825 reported his death as follows:

At Lancaster, Mr Hugh Miller of Sunderland, spirit merchant aged 69.

I'm assuming he was away on holiday/business and would have been buried back in Sunderland.
Many thanks.

I am looking for the MIs for the following:

William Grant, 1784 - 1875 b. Knockando and his wife Sarah Miller 1785 - 1851/1855 also b. Knockando
Their son, James Grant, 1812 - 1900, b. Dulnain Bridge and his wife Christina McIntosh 1815 - 1879 b. Grantown, plus their son Donald Grant, 1860 - 1864 b. Grantown

They all lived, from the 1820s onwards, and died in Grantown and, according to his death notice, James is definitely buried in Inverallan graveyard. He was quite wealthy, owning a number of properties, so was easily able to afford a stone for his parents and his family. I have Alison Mitchell's pre-1855 MIs for Inverallan, Cromdale, Advie and Duthil but none of them are there (she does have some post 1855s listed).

William's parents and brother Lachlan are buried in Duthil, I have that MI and a photo, so it is possible he may be there, it's only about 6 miles from Grantown.

As his eldest son was the informant on the death certificate, I think it likely that James Grant is buried with his wife and son so they should all be in Inverallan.

Can anyone find them for me?  Many thanks

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Elizabeth Grant
« on: Sunday 03 March 13 10:54 GMT (UK)  »
I have Elizabeth Grant born:
29/06/1843   GRANT   ELIZABETH   JAMES GRANT MARGARET MURRAY   F   CROMDALE AND INVERALLAN   /INVERNESS/MORAY
However, her father enters her on the 1851 and 1861 censuses as born in Stirling where her sister was born. Her mother appears on the 1841 in Grantown but died in Stirling in 1845.  I can't find an Elizabeth born in Stirling so he may be misremembering.
She appears on the 1851 as Elizabeth and 1861 as Betsy living at home in Grantown with her father and stepmother Christina McIntosh.
I don't have her on the 1871, although I have this possible:
GRANT       Betsy       Servnt       U       F       27       General Servant Domestic        Morayshire - Cromdale       Cromdale

On 5th Aug 1869, according to church records, Elizabeth became an immersed member of the Christadelphian Church.  The only other record I have of her is in "The Christadelphian" of 1876 which reports:
LEEDS—Brother Paterson writes: “... On the other hand we have added Sister Grant, of Grantown, who has obtained a situation here..."
That is definitely Elizabeth as she was the only female Grant in the ecclesia at the time.  Then I lose her.

Can anyone find any trace of Elizabeth/Betsy Grant after her move south, a marriage, death, census...

Midlothian / Ann* Grant - marriage
« on: Tuesday 11 December 12 09:37 GMT (UK)  »
I am looking for a marriage for Ann Grant, born Stirling 1841 but moved to Grantown when she was 2.  Her parents are James Grant and Margaret Murray.  She appears on the 1851 in Grantown with her father and stepmother.  In 1860 she is a witness at her sister Margaret's marriage to Henry Fairlie in Edinburgh.  She appears on the 1861 in Edinburgh, the same street from which her sister was married so may have taken over her job.

Henry ARMOUR, married, 71 Printer (1 Man & 2 Boys) b.
Margaret ARMOUR, wife 70 b. Stirlingshire
Ann WEBB, Visitor 22 b. Ireland
Ann GRANT, 19 Domestic Servt b. Stirlingshire
Address: Bucclench Place, Bucclench, Midlothian

The next mention of her is in Canada where her brother William mentions seeing his sister and her family, who is in her 80s and whom he had not seen since he was a young child, while visiting Rochester USA in 1923. I know this is Ann as I have accounted for all the others.  Unfortunately he doesn't give her married name.  My thinking is that she must have married and emigrated between the 1861 Census and 1874 when William came to Edinburgh.  Can anyone help with the marriage?

In 1878 James Macintosh was the informant on his mother's death certificate in Inverness.  Then they seem to disappear.  The 1871 is the last census record for them and there are no death records for either of them that I can see.  I am wondering if anyone can find any trace of them emigrating.  Christina's sister and her husband and children emigrated to South Africa at the end of the seventies and there were family in Canada from earlier emigrations.

Thanks for any help,
Jenny
