Wallen and Welan and various other spellings are gypsy and traveller surnames in England also.

Hi,
Kelly in records as a traveller goes back to about 1697 found in Ireland, Scotland and England, remembering that Irish Travellers had been in England and Scotland long before the Gypsies arrived, also spelt as Kelley, Rawson slightly earlier but that is in England around 1596, there is a reference for 1891 England which may be the census for that year [not looked myself].

Gypsy History is entwined with marriage of cousins even brother and sisters in the past and it can be very hard to unravel say the Jones who ended up being Boswell's or The Lee's who had originally been Emmett's the Hilden's who had been Small's etc etc, and then you are told say the Brazil's and the Jones are they are one and the same from over in Surry or the Botton's or Denby's someone say's, no they are not Gypsies, the thing is any surname can be a Gypsy name, just because they are never mentioned as a Gypsy does not make them Gorger, I have many Gypsy friends who are not in my family line but live in my town so research is easy to a point but sometimes contradictory so caution is always needed when listening to tales of old, I even remember once talking to a English Traveller who tried to pass themselves of as a Romany, why I do not know as their history is as rich as the Gypsy's, finding your past is just a matter of research research research, and leg work as you wont find it all on the WWW.

Hi,
My mother back in the sixties and seventies lived next door to a family called Sayer, and a few years ago at her wake I spoke to the man about family trees etc and I recall he did say that his family came from the Sussex area and that his ancestors were as the name say's Sayers, the Romany did not have Sayers in that sense but the surname "Sayer/s" is referenced as Gypsy life in the Journal's of RTFHS,

Hi,
Has stated before Probate, as for Gypsy Lore, No person would of inherited anything it would of all been destroyed,  the Vardo burnt to ashes with all of the deceased's personal belongings inside, china would of been smashed " very unlucky to drink or eat from a dead persons utensil's" pots and pans all would destroyed and sometimes this would leave the remaining family with nothing but the clothes that they stood in even the horse or donkey would be killed or taken to the knackers yard, any gold or silver would perhaps just be thrown in a river, there would be no squabbling over who get's what, even the deceased's name would not be spoken and in some instances if a relation had been named after the departed then they would change it to another,  that was Romany Lore, you stood on your own two feet, if it's any help.

hello again,
It does look like a small s but it could be Daley that surname also is spelt with many variations and is also a Irish surname there are some on the Scottish census 1851 born Ireland and born Scotland, Dawes I have seen as a Gypsy surname but not Darcy but that is not to say that it is not a Gypsy name, have you looked at the possibility that they may have been English Traveller's other than Romany Gypsies they also camped along side and some did marry with the Romany, there also could be an Irish connection as I know some of the Sussex Tribes did go over to Ireland and back again, I know how frustrating it can be to nail a person or family but sometimes you have to admit defeat or go with a gut instinct, I do hope you reach your goal all the best.

Hi'
I have never come across the surname of Daisy and know the area well, perhaps it was just a surname that they choice to use now and then, all of the surname's Gypsies or The Romany used are not recorded and a new one crop's up now and then, they had a habit of using a alias for many reasons good and bad or may be the Daisy surname was that of a non Gypsy who married into a Gypsy family, it is a nice piece of historic reference and I hope you can find what you are looking for, there was a family of Brown's, Henry and his wife Lavina camped on Blackdown Common in Sussex in the late 1800's along with some of my Jones and Brazil family members.

Hi again,

The only Gil I have come across is a record for a baptism of Henry Gil on the 25 February 1698/9 at Scalford the son of Kathrine and ? from a Leicestershire County Council Parish record the ref is DE2500/1, you would have to contact them if you wanted any more info such as from what parish church the record was extracted from, also if you have not done so already look at other spellings of the surname such as Gyl or Gils you never know, hope you find what you are seeking all the best.
