Lanarkshire / Re: Annotation on 1919 Birth Cert "Adopted"

Many thanks for your reply. I have been trawling the 1921 census for both names but too many permutations. The cremation record in 2000 shows both surnames so I'll plod on.

Lanarkshire / Annotation on 1919 Birth Cert "Adopted"
« on: Thursday 22 December 22 18:49 GMT (UK)  »
I have a 1919 Birth certificate where in the margin the Registrar has written " Adopted" and added his signature. The birth was registered by the Mother nine days after the child was born. My question is, in 1919 , did the phrase "Adopted" have the same meaning as today? If so, it might solve another puzzle from the 1921 Census. Thanks again.

Lanarkshire / Re: Wishaw geography/Brownlie Family

James junior was a distant relative of mine, in fact my G, Grandmother's son by her second marriage, he claimed to have served in various Scottish Regiments, seemingly total fiction as loyalty to your regiment was everything. I would like to discover why he flitted between the names of Brownlie and Docherty as his Mother's maiden name seems to have been Hamilton, so no obvious connection there. I have found out that his daughter, Annie, emigrated to Australia whilst his other two children remained in Scotland. James died in a lunatic asylum in Stirling in 1953, so his life story remains a mystery to me. Did something happen to him in his early life to  influence his choices.

I flit between sorrow and anger at his life, so I feel I need to understand the man, who married my Grandmother better..

Lanarkshire / Wishaw geography/Brownlie Family
« on: Friday 09 December 22 18:36 GMT (UK)  »
I am back after some time away whilst I tried to organise my bits of paper . I am now on the track of the Brownlie family, sometime of the Royal Hotel, Main Street, Wishaw as well as Quarry Row, Cambusnethan. I know that James Brownlie  senior ,on 1861 census is noted as hotel keeper, whilst his son also James, born 1858 later lived at Quarry Row, Cambusnethan. James Junior also sometimes used the surname of Docherty which has complicated my research. James Junior seems to have lived a complicated life. I would love to tie up a few more loose ends. As each door closes another opens. Thanks to you all

As usual with lots of help from Roots Chat I have managed to trace the people I was looking for. Still some questions but they will be lost in the mist of time. Many thanks again

I know what you mean. MY OH's maternal family were Leithers and woe betide you if you said they lived in Edinburgh. We actually had a wander down Leith Walk a few years looking for the " Hole in The Wall", one of his childhood memories and we stopped a road sweeper for directions only to discover a supermarket had been built on the spot. Such is life
