Australia / Convict: Edmund Stone
« on: Sunday 14 February 21 11:14 GMT (UK)  »
Looking for any information about a convict called Edmund STONE.

Convicted in Old Bailey in 1793 where his name was recorded as Edward Stone - age 17, Larceny
Convict Registers have Edmund Stone, 17, Larceny, 7 years, of Shrewsbury (Staffordshire)
 - Def. same man as his accomplice was same in both records (Ann Sommerville - Not Guilty)

As he was only 17 years old in 1793 I suspect he didn't have a trade or a professional occupation.
(Possible bp: Shrewsbury 19.06.1774, son of Edmund Stone, Serjeant, but haven't confirmed this one)

I haven't seen any records in Australian archives so I suspect he may have died prior to transportation but maybe I've missed something. Did he make it to Oz? NSW or Tas?

Any help would be very much appreciated.

Thanks
Di

London and Middlesex / 1841 Census - Trash in Sussex Street
« on: Saturday 30 January 21 11:04 GMT (UK)  »
I'm looking for the 1841 census record for Harriet TRASH in Sussex Street Camden area or close-by

Harriet Trash of Sussex St was buried March 1849 at St Pancras Camden, age 72 (ie born abt 1777)

Another burial some years earlier:

Richard Trash of Sussex St was buried Oct 1834, St Pancras Camden. He was 60, (born 1774)
I'm guessing that they were related or connected

As Harriet was still in Sussex St in 1849, theoretically she would be there in the 1841 census but I've been unable to find her listed anywhere in any census.

Love to find Harriet to find who is with her and if she was born in County.

Fingers crossed

Thanks folks

London and Middlesex / Bunhill Fields Burial 1806 - Somervell
« on: Monday 25 January 21 11:30 GMT (UK)  »
I've found various versions of the death/burial record for John Somervell/Somerville.

He seems to have died at the end of April 1806 but ..

One burial record states he was bur 29th April 1806, others say 30 April. He was brought from "Charter House" and was aged 87 years.

Another burial record has: Buried 30 Apr 1806 John Somerville, Admitted 15 Mar 1793 , Died 25 Apr 1806 , aged 87. In Bunhill Fields.

I don't know what Deceased online has but if it's like others I've seen it probably has limited info.

Where did the extra information come from that has been recorded on a Burial record - ie he'd been in a workhouse for abt 13 years (not something I'd expect to see on a Burial record)

I'd love to find any records from a  Charter house Workhouse if there was such a place in 1806.
Any idea where to find these records? Could that be where the above extra info came from?

Help or suggestions would be muchly appreciated  :D

Thanks folks - have a great day and stay safe

United States of America / KORBER in Connecticut
« on: Saturday 16 January 21 10:10 GMT (UK)  »
I'm having a little trouble finding the death of husband & wife Charles & Abigail KORBER.
Charles Korber born abt 1830 Holland (Cigar Maker), Abigail born abt 1836 Kent.

The couple were last sighted in Hartford Connecticut on 1870 census where they had 5 children with them. (Arrived USA early 1860's)

There are various family trees on Ancestry but no deaths of Charles & Abigail unfortunately.

Charles was born in Holland & I hoped that might have helped pin him down but nothing so far.

If anyone can spot a death/burial record I'd appreciate the details please.

Thanks

London and Middlesex / A Winner - from Removal & Settlement records
« on: Saturday 02 January 21 10:07 GMT (UK)  »
I have just found part of a record on a Removal Order dated 1839 - a wonderful lead, hopefully

I'm surprised that so much family info was requested & recorded when James was interviewed prior to removal & settlement.
Unfortunately I'm unable to find any of the ROGERS family mentioned.
I believe my transcription is almost correct so I must be missing something.

"Mothers maiden name was Ann Rogers
recollects Grandmother Rogers she had resided with
her daughter Harriet Trash wife of ......... Trash
at No 200 Corner of Alfred Mews Tottenham
Court Rd ---- abt 1815     - Trash only rented
an apartment there

Grandmother Rogers had 3 children -

 visl Mrs Trash as above
Mary   - suppd to be Williams

dont know the abode of either -

the other child - named Gowen is dead"

It looks like a fabulous lead in tracing my Rogers family but all those mentioned seem to have vanished.

Any leads, ideas or help in finding the family would be most welcome

Stay safe & thanks

« on: Monday 10 August 20 06:35 BST (UK)  »
I've been looking for burial of -
Margaret PARKER (the wife of John Parker) buried June 1674 at Chrishall Essex
[Her husband was bur 28 May 1679 (record hard to read but I think it says "John")]

 - Margaret's burial reported to be on D/P 365/1/1 on Chrishall parish records but I can't see it.

Could someone tell me the image number or confirm this record exists please.

Thanks a lot

Australia / Nicholson - Thargomindah and beyond!
« on: Tuesday 21 July 20 07:24 BST (UK)  »
After years of searching I think I've found a missing rellie  ;D

Thomas A. (Alexander) NICHOLSON (born 1851 Southampton Hampshire) was on 1861 census with his parents Peter & Fanny, and then he vanished.

I've just found a death registered in Qld that looks too good to ignore: (via FindMyPast)
Thomas Alexander Nicholson :-
Died      24 Feb 1927
Mother  Frances Morrell
Father   Peter English Nicholson
Registration number is: 1927/000326
(I don't know where this guy died or how old he was)

Electoral Roll (1901) has possible sighting of Nicholson at Nocundra, Bulloo. He's 50 yrs old, a labourer

My Thomas had parents - Fanny Moule & Peter Nicholson (a Scotsman)
Parents names on his death records look sooo close that I'm frustrated I can't find any other info about him from 1861 - 1901? or his death 1927.

Anyone have any ideas about records from the Thargomindah - Bulloo area? Or any other suggestions confirming who the gent was who died in 1927.

Thanks

Di

Armed Forces / Otway, Charles Maj General 1787-1878
« on: Wednesday 29 April 20 02:05 BST (UK)  »
Hi Folks,

I've been looking for information re  Major General Charles Otway.
Bits & pieces found to date :
1871 census says he was born West Indies abt 1788
He retired (on full pay) in 1855 after serving in Royal Artillery for more than 50 years.
He married once in 1864 to Mary Walker (widow). He was 78, she was abt 32.
(Marr Cert says Charles' father was Joseph Otway, Coln )
He died Nov 1878, buried at Charlton Cemetery Greenwich. (Burial record states he was "supposed to be 92")
Pall Mall Budget (newspaper?) has an obit:
"Lieutenant General Charles Otway of the Royal Artillery died at Blackheath on Friday week. The deceased was one of the oldest officers in the service. He entered the Royal Military Academy in 1804 and obtained his first commission in 1807. He served in the West Indies and Canada and was for some years adjutant of a battalion at Woolwich. He also commanded the Rocket Troop Royal Artillery on its first formation. He retired on full pay with rank of Major General in 1855."

I can't seem to find Charles in any census apart from 1871.
His wife/widow Mary Walker (dau of John Bushnell Esq) remarried 1879 to George Betts Roberts.
 - Seems she was abt 46, he was 22
Can't find them in any census although Mary Roberts (wife of George B Roberts) was buried in 1894 with her first husband - Charles Otway.

Any info about Charles Otway, son of Joseph Otway of West Indies, would be wonderful

Thanks

Di
