Were Thomas, Richard, John, James and Alexander all dead at this time, or is there not enough information to go on?

With other information I have this would say that Richard was the grandfather.

Thomas was the eldest son,
John (elder) was the father of Thomas, Richard, John, James and Alexander,
and his other brother was Richard.  Richard had one son called James

John (junior) got the lands (unless Thomas has a son called John as well).

This could put my 10th great grandfather as Richard, takes me back to the Tutors, and I could call it enough!

David Brunton was born around 1835 in Carnwarth, son to William Scott Brunton (born 28th March 1808 in Yarrow) and Janet Inglis,

Due to a court case in 1834 the actual father of David is dubious to say the least. Its possible his father was a Richard Hill.

No. you just email or call them and they will help. You may then have the lair number, but pinpointing it in the graveyard without a lair map is impossible. The gravediggers and the council have the maps. Again, I have found them to be extremely helpful in actually taking me to the exact position of the lair.

However, I have strangers buried in a family bought lair in Selkirk. In Traquair and Yarrow the lairs are still ours alone.

I withdraw that statement as it turns out its a 1st cousin x2 removed of mine in the lair, and granddaughter of one of the occupants.
