Durham Lookup Requests / Patrick Burns,Gateshead.
« on: Saturday 03 August 13 18:34 BST (UK)  »
Hello,

I am looking for any information regarding the family of Patrick Burns especially his parents and his wife. Patrick Burns known as Paddy was said to have an irish accent and married to Elizabeth (maiden name ?). I know he was in Gateshead 101 Peareth street from around the birth of Catherine Burns daughter born 03.05.1900. Catherine had several siblings Thomasena(Ena), Elizabeth(Lizzy),Alice,John(Jack),Francis.

I saw the complicated set-up of the Wagon inn,Gateshead Highstreet 1881 Census and have been thinking that this could be the right link for Patricks parents. One thing stuck out to me is that the family appear to be living near the highstreet in 1900. Could i be going down the wrong path as i see there were a few other Patricks in Gateshead.

If anybody can help I'd appeciate it.

Many thanks,

Francesca

I'm trying to unscamble the family and other residents living at the Wagon Inn in 1881. It appears to be a complicated setup! In particular I would like to rule out Patrick Burns as being the Patrick Burns from Upper Killeavy, Newry, Armagh, as listed on the IGI, but it's not easy. There seem to be at least two Patricks in the area of Gateshead who maybe married sisters called Mackin. Any thoughts on this one?
Thanks, Chris.

So they both started a new family. James and Maria must have been together for such a small amount of time and then separated but stayed married for all those years.

Looks like James Niland started a new family as well

1901 for Usworth Durham

James Niland 37 b Wolverhampton Staffs - coal miner underground - deputy overman
Nora 27 b Ireland
Mary 1mth b Usworth

I will go look at that. I really can't thank you enough.

James Niland aged 17 can be found on the 1881 in Usworth with father Patrick plus siblings

Thank you very much for this. I'm off to have a closer look.

It's more likely that Maria was still married and they had to wait for James to die before they could marry

Probable death for James

I wonder could he have been in the war? Could this be part of the reason they married later?

Hi,

Thank you, I had never noticed this before and on his death certifcate it mentions his Rank/Profession as a Coal Hever.

That could be possible maybe this is why I have been having diffuiculty in finding a marriage and Mary's maiden name.

Thanks very much,

Francesca

I have the death certificate of my 2nd great Grandfather Joseph Harrison Elliott born 1872 in Gateshead, Durham who Married a Maria (unusre of maiden name) born in 1869 and I know about their children. I have gotten stuck and have been lead down several routes that have left me guessing and I can't seem to get anywhere. I hope to find his parents.

Any help much appreciated,

Fran
