Shropshire / Re: Andrew Penson - Looking for his marraige c. 1716
« on: Saturday 29 July 23 20:40 BST (UK)  »
Dear Roots Chatters,

As the original poster of this thread, I am pleased to say I have now discovered some hard evidence that proves that the maiden name of Andrew Penson's wife Ann was Addenbrooke and that she is the Ann baptized in Jan 1695/6 the daughter of John Addenbrooke and Dorcas his wife.

In the PCC Will of Andrew Swift of Shrewsbury, written in 1749, probate 1751, he leaves a bequest to Ann the wife of Andrew Penson. He calls her his Kinswoman and confirms her identity by stating that she was the daughter of John Addenbrook Gent. of Little Hales.

Andrew Swift gave the Pensons one hundred pounds for the use and benefit of themselves and their children.

Andrew Swift was Ann Penson's cousin. His father was also called Andrew.
Andrew Swift's mother was Ann Addenbrooke the daughter of John Addenbrooke and Joyce Bowdler and the sister of Ann Penson's father, John Addenbrooke of Little Hales.

I hope this information will be of use to other Penson/Addenbrooke researchers and remove any doubts about who Ann was.

Sincerely
Venlow

Hi RootsChatters

You may be interested to know that some of these heir hunters look at online trees. I was contacted a few years ago about someone in one of my Ancestry trees.

I had been told of about the person sometime ago but was surprised to find out they had only lately died as I had been told they died at a young age.

I told the heir hunter some extra information that was not mentioned in my tree which satisfied him that he was on the right track and that any heirs, if they existed, would be found in Canada.

The Common Room / Re: What surname could this be? (Mallack)

Hi Samuel

Could be Mattock.

Uncrossed Ts and the C mistaken for an R and the K mistaken for an H.

Find My Past has 314 Mattocks in their Somerset Marriage Index.  Some are from Taunton. Also 406 baptisms and 332 burials. These are transcribed indexes. They don't have the original records.

I did not see a Benedicta but these indexes are probably not the from all the parishes.

Family Search has a page with links to various websites for Somerset.

As does GENUKI

Good Luck with your search.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Re: Abbreviation for christened

Good Morning

Thank you for your input everyone. I was rubbish at Latin so I didn't get to do Greek.

Now I come to think of it I have also seen Xpofer as a short form for Christopher.

Cheers

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Abbreviation for christened

Hi RootsChatters

I am now working on some Parish Registers from the mid 1500s written in English.

I keep coming across a word that looks like xpend.  E.g. "the xv th of May was xpend Mary daughter of John Smith, mercer.

I realize this is a short form for christened but am I reading it correctly? Is the second letter a p? If so, why?

Can anyone enlighten me please?  I did try googling but didn't get any joy and one site I clicked on came up in red and Norton told me "Don't go there". So please don't try googling on my behalf.

Thanks for reading

Hi jbml

Thank you for taking the time to post that extract. That is really interesting.

I must widen my search for the baptism of the child who was named executor. He could be younger than I assumed.

Thanks again.
Sincerely,
Venelow

Thank you Bookbox

I tried Googling this question but didn't get anywhere.

The age of 14 and over looks like there may have been an earlier wife or the marriage I found was not the right one.

It's tricky when the baptism records don't show the mother's forename.

I have a wife dying in 1560 and a new child born in 1561 who is also mentioned in a Herald's Visitation. The death of the father in 1563 (probably a plague death) and a posthumous child born in 1563 that is mentioned as a child to be born in his Will of 1563.

I have not found the marriage of 1560 -1561. That may have taken place outside London.

Reaching the limits of records for ordinary folks. All I have left to check are possible Vintners company records.

Thank you again for your information

The Common Room / Age of Executor 1500s.

Hi Rootschatters

I am working on a English Will from the mid 1500s and it appears that the Executor named in the Probate was the Testator's son. Is it possible for an Executor to be a minor under twenty one years? If so how much of a minor would that be - 18 years 15 maybe?

I thought I had found the Testator's marriage but am having to rethink that with the appearance of a son who is clearly older than than the seven years between the marriage and the wife's death. Of course the marriage I found could be a second wife. The testator was on his third marriage when he died.

Thoughts or suggestion welcomed. Thanks for reading.

The Common Room / Re: A Crossley Challenge - Richard of Darton.

Hello jgc1066

What a lovely surprise! Thank you so much.

I had tentatively started to investigate the Crosland aspect but more pressing things in life put the Crossley/Croslands on the back burner.

This information may also help sort out another mystery that has arisen. I thought I would do a search for my (2nd) husband's surname to see if any of my DNA matches had the name in their tree.

To my surprise I share DNA with my husband's cousin!  We both have Crossleys in our trees and suspect this is where our match comes from. The relationship is quite distant but the information you have so kindly shared may shed some light.

Thank you again and my best wishes to you and yours for a Happy and Successful New Year.

And a Happy New Year to all Rootschatters.

Sincerely
