Monmouthshire / St Mellon’s parish records
« on: Thursday 13 December 18 09:50 GMT (UK)  »
Where would be the best place to search for parish records (1720-1830) of the Richards family in St Mellon’s, Rumney, Marshfield and Coedkernew. They don’t seem to have much on Find my past. I thought welsh registers were on FindMyPast.

Worcestershire / William Smith 1812 -1892 Belbroughton

I would be grateful if anyone knows  any additional information on this man and his family.
His daughter Emily born 1853 in Belbroughton was my great grandmother
I believe he was born in Rock and I know he died in Belbroughton in 1892.
I have seen details of the children on the censuses but would be grateful to know anything else.

I would like to find more information on these 2 brothers, born in Merthyr Tydfil.
They are the last children of John Davies (landlord of the Crown Hotel in High St Merthyr) and his second wife Mary Ann.  I can see these 2 boys on the 1881 census.
Their father died in 1883 and their mother in 1888.
I cannot find any definite trace of Edward subsequently and can only find WF Davies on the 1891 census -where he is staying with a relative in Merthyr and is described as an auctioneers clerk.
Any help with tracing them further would be appreciated.

(I have been able to trace all the other children of John Davies but that doesn't help me with these two)

Thanks

I have spent a lot of time on this but nothing currently proven I'm afraid.  I feel that Henry and William who appear in Beckford from 1729 have to be the Bishops Cleeve family as Edward Clements's  sons Henry / Harry and William.   Those 2 otherwise disappear without trace in Bishops Cleeve . I have traced and been able to exclude all other local Henry / Harry Clements in the period.

I have gone over the original Bishops Cleeve register in Gloucester records office very very carefully and documented all the Clements from about 1590 - 1700.  Although there are various Clements in the BC register before 1678 , I cannot prove a link to John Clements there earlier than his marriage in 1678.  I can speculate on various early links to Tewkesbury, Tredington, Ashchurch but its not proven.  I have traced and ruled out other Clements in adjoining places like Didbrook

Henry's first son was baptised in Alstone; other children were in Beckford. The family seem to have then settled at Grafton and then used Ashton under Hill church more than Beckford.  I have not been able to identify Henry's  death or the death of John his son, but the burial of their wives Eleanor and Lydia is documented.

There were a lot of deaths in the village of Beckford in 1728 - must have been some sort of epidemic - ?? Henry and brother William moved there from Bishops Cleeve to vacant tenancies????

Maybe one could prove things in the Manorial court rolls for Grafton.

I would be interested to know what leads your father followed, and his conclusions /speculation on this, and any further thoughts you have.

Carmarthenshire / Re: James Davies (David) Llansawel
« on: Sunday 05 April 15 23:37 BST (UK)  »
Thanks for this; its been very useful and made me rethink things a bit.

I was aware of this Lewis David at Ffoesgotta.  Firstly, because in the National Library of Wales catalogue,  there is a reference to a tenancy agreement (I think in 1749) to a Lewis David (from Llanybydder) starting the tenancy at Ffoesgotta. Then the first page of the Llansawel parish register records the baptism of Lewis David's daughter Elizabeth in 1751, with the birth of son Lewis two pages later in 1754.  To get earlier than this for the older children, I think I would either have to go to Aberystwyth to use  the available bits of the Llansawel Bishops transcripts at NLW, or possibly look at LLanybdder registers .  Finally there are the wills.

But my problem was (and I think still is) that I am not really been sure if this Lewis David and his descendants are truly an ancestor - because I don't fully understand the patronymics system of names and how it was used at this time.

My reckoning was that the son Lewis baptised in 1754 would be named Lewis Lewis.  Certainly there are subsequent records of Lewis Lewis in the wills and then at the neighbouring farm Pantyiauiau, and finally being at Ffoesgotta in the early 1800s and being buried in Abergorlech in 1817.

I previously discounted this Lewis as the ancestors of James David, as I didn’t think he could be the father of James David as he is called  Lewis Lewis, not Lewis David.  I didn't think of the possibility of the brother with the names reversed.

James Davies (my ancestor) was  at  Ffoesgotta in the 1850s as a tenant famer.  From parish registers and censuses, I think he was born at Hafodwen, farmed at Banc when his children were born, then lived at Rhydglyn prior to living at Ffoesgotta.  He was a deacon at Bethel chapel in the 1850s.  His son John Davies farmed next door at Blaenresgair from about the 1840s and the Davies family are still at Blaenresgair.

I knew about the wills you mention but couldn’t previously really relate them to "Lewis David" the father of James.  However reading Lewis David’s 1798 will again (more carefully following your email) makes me rethink some of this, and perhaps as you suggest David Lewis could be Lewis  David.

In the 1798 will Lewis David (senior) leaves “£5 to my son David Lewis” and then later in the will leaves some livestock “to my son Lewis”.  Harry Lewis’s will leaves “£10 to my brother David Lewis” and then later makes a bequest “to my brother Lewis Lewis”.
This makes me believe that Lewis David Sr had four sons Harry, Thomas, David Lewis, and Lewis. Could this David Lewis be the Lewis David referred to as father of James in 1783 - or would he be called David Lewis Lewis??   This is where my knowledge of Welsh naming traditions lets me down.  Do you have any advice / experience with  this?  Does it happen that the names could be reversed?

I’d really appreciate help on this point.

Carmarthenshire / James Davies (David) Llansawel
« on: Friday 03 April 15 17:20 BST (UK)  »
I have traced my Davies ancestors back to  James Davies who died at Ffoesgotta farm Llansawel in 1867.  His death certificate gives his age as 86, and the census records him as born in Llansawel.
He  is described as James David in some of the Baptism records of his children but James Davies on his marriage record in 1805 and in later records.
The only Baptism of James that I can find in the Llansawel register in the right time frame is 1783 James son of Lewis David of Hafod Wen.

I am not sure where to go from here and would appreciate any help.

The Llansawel register only goes back to 1750 although there are apparently some earlier Bishops transcripts in the National Library.

1. Does anyone know if Hafod Wen was one of the farms of the Edwinsford estate?

2.  In the 18th century, they may well have been using patronymic names in Llansawel.
What name should I be looking for, as regards the Baptism of Lewis David in earlier registers?

3. Anywhere else I could look?

Advice appreciated.

Gloucestershire / Isaac Garland Mangotsfield. Born about 1750
« on: Friday 28 November 14 23:51 GMT (UK)  »
I am trying to trace the birth details and parents of an Isaac Garland, a coal miner killed at Stapleton in Aug 1800. I believe he married Joanna in St George's 1769 and had a son Joseph born in 1773 & christened in Mangotsfield.
Any help with his origins would be appreciated. I saw a reference on the Internet to an Isaac Garland christened in 1744 but I have no more details and haven't been able to check the Mangotsfied or other adjacent  registers for around 1744 to know if this is true.
Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks for your suggestion.
I have done quite a bit of work on tracing this ancestor since February, looking at  parish records for all Glos and Worcs Henry and Harry names in the time frame, and eliminating the incorrect Henry's carefully. I am now fairly confident the one I want was Harry baptised 1706  in Bishops Cleeve (son of Edward, and grandson of John who married there in 1678).  Incidentally the parents of the Henry at St Mary de Lode were from Miserden. I am now trying to clarify the origins of John at Bishops Cleeve. I suspect he may be from Tredington rather than Bishops Cleeve. Thanks again.

Gloucestershire Lookup Requests / Re: Clements Hinton on the Green
« on: Sunday 02 February 14 23:14 GMT (UK)  »
Hi. We must be related many generations back.
George Clements (senior) was also my great great grandfather. My great grandfather was William - he was a signal man with GWR in Great Malvern. My grandfather was Albert Victor Clements, born Malvern 1891.
I haven't got my records with me as I write this so it is from memory. George's father was Charles, baptized in the next parish Ashton under Hill in 1803. Charles was 10th child of William& Elizabeth Clements, all mainly in the Ashton register. William was son of John and Lydia who married in Ashton I think in 1761 or 2. John was baptised in Beckford in 1732 or 4; his parents were Henry & Eleanor who married in a Beckford in 1729. That's as far back as I have currently traced.
Hope that helps.
