Hi.

I wonder if anyone who has access to Ancestry can help?

I am trying to read what the occupation is for a resident in Lucker, Northumberland for 1841.  The writing is very faint.  My laptop screen is very small and I cannot enlarge the image.

The man in question is John Elliot 40 years old (born 1801), husband of Jane Elliot. He is living in Lucker village though Ancestry has it as part of Bamburgh.  The name 'Lucker' is discernable just above the name 'village'. The information is HO1107/808 12 page 18 line 16.  It is Bamburgh parish and the enumerator is 7b.

I have tried and tried to read what his occupation is. I do have a few ideas but will keep them until someone else with better eyesight can make out this man's occupation.

Thanks JA.

There is another John Elliott - my relative - in Lucker also but he is quite some distance away.

Ayrshire / what was Auchinleck parish called in 1841 please?
« on: Thursday 24 October 13 12:14 BST (UK)  »
Hi.

I am trying to find a place in Auchinleck for 1841.  I have tried several strategies but seem, not to be able to find the parish in the FreeCen which is far superior for address searches than Ancestry.

Can someone tell me if Auchinleck was under another parish for 1841.  I assume it was part of Sorn or perhaps Muirkirk.

Yours NG.

Durham / Heworth Lane and pinpointing it for the 1841 census
« on: Saturday 29 June 13 12:42 BST (UK)  »
Hello.

My ancestors are found living in district 4 of the Chapelry of Jarrow - Heworth.  I think the area may have been known as Heworth Lane.  For the 1841 census it consists of 9 districts which all seem to be clustered around a main road - the turnpike road Gateshead to Sunderland.  My ancestors are living on the north of the turnpike road but to the 'east of a road leading from the said road at Low Heworth to the River Tyne'.  I have done a bit of research and have even tried looking at the fantastic map that Durham Council have provided to fathom whereabouts this area would be.  All of the residents which make up a large amount of families seem to lie between the Heworth Village and the Heworth Shore.

Is it possible that the present Heworth Lane which is a single lane on the modern map is that one and the same?

There are watermen, labourers, a mason an engineer and a chemicals work man living there so it was perhaps housing for an industrial area.  I think that my ancestor (irritatingly transcribed as Richard Kroppen - when it is in fact Straffen (Straughan) on Ancestry) may have been working with his brother in an alkaline works or perhaps even a lime stone quarry.

Any information on the exact area would be appreciated.  I do know that there were two public houses in the area the Black Bull and the Squire's Arms and there is an inn keeper about six houses away from my family.

In later years the family move back into north Northumberland where the birth place of Heworth Lane is given for the children.

Many thanks NG.

Durham / Where were the Delta iron Works in Gateshead?RESOLVED
« on: Wednesday 19 June 13 00:17 BST (UK)  »
Hello.

The information for the 1911 census tells me that a family member, living at Whickham, was a labourer in the 'Delta iron Works'.  I did a little bit of research and think it may have been also known as the Raines Delta Iron Works.  I also know that someone has discussed the whereabouts of local iron works  in other postings on this forum, but I am none the wiser.

Does anyone know anything about the Delta Iron Works and where it would have been please?

Ayrshire / Killoch Guildhall - did it exist?
« on: Sunday 12 May 13 10:53 BST (UK)  »
Hi.

My Lindsay ancestors are found at a place given as 'Killoch Guildhall' in 1851.  I know that there is an area known as Killoch on the Ayr road but cannot find anything else than it became a colliery in the 20th Century.

Does anyone local to the area know anything about Killoch Guildhall (or what could be a corruption of the word guildhall) please.

The guildhall is suggestive of a town or village but where my ancestors live is part of Mauchline parish. Robert is a railway labourer.

Thank you.

Buteshire / Parishes on island of Bute
« on: Monday 29 April 13 17:47 BST (UK)  »
Hello.

I am very confused about Bute and Buteshire and am trying to determine the parishes that existed on the island of Bute for the censuses from 1841 onwards.

I am obviously being very stupid.

Is the parish of Kilmory on Bute island or was it on Arran island (which perhaps, would have been classified as Bute)?

My ancestors information for the 1851 census states that they say they were born at Kilmore.  As much as I can make out there is no parish called Kilmore there but Kilmory is part of Bute.  The more I try to fathom out which is correct the more I get confused.

What were the names of the parishes on the island of Bute for 1841/1851 and onwards please?

Yours NG.

I am posting this on the off chance that ZoeC reads it and will contact me.

She has all of my family interests in her surname table.  I cannot contact her because she has not made any postings.  She has not been on this site for a long time.

PLEASE do not add anything here unless you know ZoeC.

Technical Help / 'Max PM limit' Why can I not send pm?
« on: Thursday 26 January 12 09:15 GMT (UK)  »
Hello.

I think that I may be answering my own question here but...

I was surfing the surname interest table and found a possible family connection.  When I have tried to send the user a PM I cannot because it says that there is a max PM limit issue.  I wonder is this because the user has little to no posts or have I reached some sort of limit?

Thank you NG.
