Hi hoping someone can assist.
I downloaded a birth of a child stating born in Cla?ne, Parish of Gairloch on the 19 June 1878 as John Scott, parents Adam Scott, Shepherd and Catherine Scott MS Maclean.
Father Adam Scott was the informant.
All births on this page were registered in Mellon Charles of which via maps I know where this is. Trouble is I cannot find the place which is most likely to be a Farmlet called Cla?ne (it is hard to read correctly the middle part and also the very end which could be an e or something else.
Other entries say Bualnaluik and Mellon Udnegle - all say parish of Gairloch, and all on the page registered by John Macdonald, Mellon Charles. The official registration from Scotlandspeople is 1878 - 066/1 14  Gairloch County of Ross. I am wanting to know what the correct spelling of this place would be if anyone can assist it would be most appreciated, as I would love to find the farm on a map if possible.
Father moved about during census and this is the only place of 1 child born that I cannot locate on a map or possible area. Any help or ideas welcomed.

Kind regards
Ailsa Corlett

Armed Forces / Re: Can anyone help id this badge please - An Update
« on: Wednesday 19 October 16 03:57 BST (UK)  »
Hi everyone that helped previously with my request to id the badge.
I have had some great news about it, via the person looking after the sales of the book regarding the The Troopers Tale - The History of the Otago Mounted Rifles of which I have arranged to purchase when I go to NZ in Nov. He had a friend who was very knowledgeable in this area and has answered my questions.
It is a Helmet plate of the Otago Mounted Rifles, dating from the reign of Edward V11 (so c 1902 - 1908) - the plate was a generic one to OMR units who then added their own brass scroll which was screwed to the main plate - (mine is missing the scroll but you can see the holes where it was suppose to go). He said it was a nice item and is reasonably rare. The Scrolls would have been for the Mataura, Kelso, Southland and Wallace areas. My badge dates from around the early 1900's and for what was considered the South Otago area or Southland.
My quest now is to locate which family member it belonged to and from using the newspapers, archives etc I have narrowed it down to a couple of families it might belong to, so I am on my way to finding the correct person.
I just wanted to give an update and let you know how much I appreciated the help and the many directions in which to look and follow through on.
Kind regards Ailsa

thanks Ken, I did not know what the inscription meant. Might make some interesting research.
I will see what I can find out from the dealers.

Many thanks for the replies and the information about the time period. Seems I might be looking at around the 1906 - 1911 time frame. Sorry about the spelling error, should have done the spell check.

I have emailed the person involved in selling the book "The Troopers Tale" to see if they can also assist, also send copies of the photos to him as well.
It is the Lion above the Crown as well as the Lion in the middle that makes it hard to find the same picture on the internet. Most of the pictures do not have the Lion on the top of the Crown, nor can I see the middle inscription that I have on my badge on any other badge around.

Hoping something will come up

Hi Ken

Thanks for the reply, I think it belonged to someone in the family well before WW1 or 2. I have been trying to find anything about the badges re the Maori War or even the Boar War, but none of them look at all like the badge I have, which is why I am struggling to find details about it.

I have tried to find out via google about the middle incrisption as well, but again nothing I can find comes up.
It is : NGA  MAROHIROHI  (I am not sure if there is meant to be a gap between the NGA and the next word, as well as between Marohi and Rohi

it is having the Kings Crowns and Lions on it that makes it so different to the pictures of anything to do with the Mounted Rifles that makes it so difficult to point to the correct time period.
I will go and have a look at this book, to see what I can find. Actually going back over in Nov, so may be able to pick up a copy. I had read that they started around the 1860's

thanks and any further ideas most welcomed.

Hi, I have found among family papers etc, the following badge and really need help in
1.trying to id what type it was - (I think for hat)
2. What time period or War it was used for, (then I can try and locate a family member in that time frame)
3. I did send it to a web site regarding the NZ Otago Mounted Rifles - but never heard back.
4. Have searched for badges like this on google without success - It is the Lions on it that are making it more English looking than the NZ Otago.
5. BTW myself and family do come from Otago NZ.

If anyone can point me in the right direction I would love to hear from you.
I have attached a photo showing the front and the back.

Many thanks Lodger
I most likely will get back to you when I have done more research regarding the Forrest family now located, but I need some time to work out spouses and areas, and children of them.
Again thanks for the look, it was worth the ask even if not the right location for the GOLD family that married into FORREST

kind regards

Hi Lodger
Would you please mind to see if your Gold & Morton MI relates to any of the following family please.
I have an Elizabeth Forrest who married William GOLD in 1877 at Dalserf. Her death certificate was strange as it was the first time I had seen her mentioned as Elizabeth MORTON GOLD who died 4th April 1916, Dalserf.
It was from this that gave me the clue to her Grandparents names, who did marry and have all children in Cambusnethan. Alexander FORREST m Elisabeth MORTON 14 May 1814.
They had the following children: All in Cambusnethan (now I have a chance to follow up on them)
Janet Forrest 16 April 1815
Jean Forrest 19 May 1816
Marrion Inglis Forrest 20 April 1817
Alexander Forrest 27 Sept 1818
Jean Forrest 24 Oct 1819
Isobel Forrest 11 March 1821
John Forrest 18 May 1823
David Leighton Forrest 19 Sept 1824

As I have only found these last night I have lots of work to do as of yet, but wondered if the MORTON and GOLD did relate in anyway.
Also thought if others see these names they may have connections.
Thanks again for your time to look at your records, appreciated.
