Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Marriage between cousins.
« on: Saturday 21 March 15 10:17 GMT (UK)  »
This is from an 1894 marriage just noting that they're cousins, but can anyone help me make out what the word after cousins is?

Not even sure if it's relevant but it'll bug me.

Scotland / 1850 marriage record
« on: Thursday 08 January 15 13:32 GMT (UK)  »
Not sure if I've posted in the right section.

Just need a bit of help understanding this. The marriage was in Airdrie.

After their names, what does the 'both H.W.' mean? Some other couples on the page have the same, and some have 'both A.G.'.

I also don't understand the money sections and there are no column headers at the top of the page.

Thanks

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Passenger List.

Just wondering about this snippet of a passenger list.
Does the 'abandoned..' part of writing apply to the person below or above where it's written?

FH Documents and Artefacts / RAMC Plaque.

I'm not sure if I've posted this is in the right place.
I recently got a bunch of old family heirlooms/bit and pieces. I think this belonged to my great uncle though I'm not too sure.

It reads:

Enugu - Nigeria.
1942 - 1943.
Royal Army Medical Corps.
36WA General Hospital.
West African Forces.

It's roughly 45cmx38cm

Does anyone know why he would have this or where I can find out more information?

Scotland / Henderson, age gap.
« on: Friday 20 June 14 22:54 BST (UK)  »
I have the certificate for Jessie/Janet Henderson, who married in 1889 aged 22. Parents listed as William Henderson & Elizabeth Brunton.

I've managed to find a death record (ScotlandsPeople) that matches that information which is from 1953 where she's aged 85.

I found a death for her dad William Henderson - married to Elizabeth Brunton - in 1863, which would be a few years before Janet was born.

Not sure where to go next, there's lots of Jessie/Janet Henderson births, searching by parents names she'd have a brother James and sister Margaret, but can't find hers.

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Help with old picture.
« on: Saturday 03 May 14 22:31 BST (UK)  »
We have an old family portrait that my mum took from her grans house years ago (it's at least 100 years old).
We have no clue when or who it's of.

It's a woman (from the shoulders up) wearing a black top/dress with covered buttons, but it's very faint. She also looks like shes wearing jewellery around her neck, which appears to be a spinning charm.

The backing is a woven/linen material that's rolled like a scroll, and cracks more and more every time we look at it.

It's roughly 30x40cm and there's no writing or any sort of identifying marks on it. The photographer has used a faded technique to make it an oval shape round her. What would be the best way to help identify it?

Family History Beginners Board / Isabella/Mary
« on: Tuesday 22 April 14 17:25 BST (UK)  »
On a few separate trees on my family I've found records which name relatives as Mary, but on different records the same women are named Isabella.

Was it common for Isabella to change to Mary (or vice versa)? A nickname maybe?

Perthshire / Ballingall
« on: Sunday 16 February 14 01:05 GMT (UK)  »
My 3x great aunt Ballingall was born 1843 in Perth, and apart from her birth theres no other mention of her anywhere, she's not on any census with the family, and theres no death records for her (using SP). Is it likely she died young and it wasn't listed? Is that common?
