Donegal / Re: McClelland family, Letterkenny

Hi,

Many thanks for replying to my post. William was born around 1850-1853, possibly Waterford according to 1911 English census. His family was possibly Presbyterian though he married a Margaret Connolly, a RC, in August 1875 at St. Mary's Clonmel, Tipperary. William was living in Portlaw at the time. Later he moved to Manchester in England and died there in 1919. So far cannot be sure about siblings but if he came originally from Letterkenny in Donegal, then other siblings could be a George, Elizabeth, Hugh, William - all with a father Hugh who was a carpenter which fits the occupation on the marriage certificate of his father, Hugh.

Kind regards,

Chris Hughes

I am trying to find out information about the McClelland family from Letterkenny, in particular a Hugh McClelland who was a carpenter in Letterkenny. My great-grandfather, William, had a father Hugh who was a carpenter and am trying to discover if the Hugh McClelland of Letterkenny may be his father. William moved to England with his family around 1870s and died in Manchester in 1919.

Trying to find out about birthdate of William McLelland, my great- grandfather, who died Manchester 1919, married to Margaret, nee Connolly. Both came from Waterford according to 1911 English census. Marriage took place in 1875 in Ireland at St. Mary's Clonmel. But have hit dead end trying to get evidence of birth record - father was Hugh, a carpenter.

Many thanks for the replies - much appreciated. Will follow up. Denomination possibly Presbyterian but not sure. Married in Church of Ireland in Clonmel but buries in 1919 in RC section of cemetery in Manchester, England.

I am trying to find out more information about my great-grandfather, William McClelland. I know he married a Margaret Connolly in 1875 at Clonmel, Tipperary. He moved with Margaret and their first child, Hugh, to England around 1878/9. He settled in Manchester where he died in 1919 following a fall. Information from the English censuses indicate he was born around 1850-53/4 and the 1911 census says he was born in Waterford. His father was Hugh McClelland who was a carpenter. I am trying to find any evidence of birth record and any siblings/relations in the Waterford/Tipperary area. Any help information much appreciated.

Waterford / William McClelland of Waterford

I am trying to trace the early history of my great-grandfather, William, in Waterford. I know he married a Margaret Connolly in 1875 at Clonmel, Tipperary. His father was Hugh McClelland whose occupation was a given as a carpenter. Around 1878-9, William and Margaret emigrated to England with their first child, Hugh,William died in 1919 in Manchester, following a fall. So far I have had no success in identifying any birth record of William in Ireland. From the different English censuses, William appears to have been born between 1850 -1853/4; on the 1911 census he said he had been born in Waterford.
I am interested in finding birth record or any siblings or other relatives, possibly in Waterford, Tipperary area where there was a small cluster of McClelland families as evidenced in the Griffiths records.
Anybody offer any help or information please? Many thanks Chris Hughes
