Westmorland / Re: Cheakley of Appleby in Westmorland

Thanks again!

Thomas is William Snr's brother.  He married Elizabeth Wilkinson on 12 Mar 1808 in Hothfield, Kent.  They had a son William born in 1808 in Kent before they moved to Appleby where Charles was born in 1811.  I haven't been able to trace them after that date.  The surname is very difficult to trace as there are so many variants

Thomas & William were both born in Warwickshire & then moved to Ashford with their parents .  William moved to Skipton where he married & had a daughter Elizabeth who according to the NBI died in Westmorland in 1829 followed by brother Thomas in 1832.  William Snr died in Skipton in 1837 while his wife Anne died in 1839.  I can trace the rest of the family to their deaths in Yorkshire but have not found anything for William Jnr so far

Now that's interesting - where did you get the information about William Cheakley being a land drainer?  He was a bailiff in Skipton before they moved to Appleby.

The family moved back to Skipton ijust after 1832 where most of them died of consumption.

Thanks ;D

John William Smith born 1873  is part of my direct Smith family as he was the son of Sarah Ann Smith
who later married Eli Riley on 7 Aug 1880 at Christ Church, Lothersdale.  She was the sister of my great grandfather Henry Smith.

Must have a look to find out more about Hannah Wallbank on Ken Hartley's website The Hartley/Wallbanks of Craven:-
http://www.tribalpages.com/family-tree/klondyke49

I will now look through the Thornton In Craven Parish Registers for the Joseph Smith you mention in your original posting.

Thanks very much!

That sounds very interesting as I'm interested in Smiths from Lothersdale & Thornton. I'll send a PM giving you my email address.

Thank you in anticipation!

So glad you're on the case Monica!

From the rest of the page & comparing the handwriting, it's clear that the writer has a very long loop to the bottom part of the "g" so I think it's overseer in Scotstown & not "at" as I had originally thought.

From what you say, the occupation he held may have been other than agricultural which might add credence to the title of Mr & not his Christian name in the register but who knows!

Just found on Scotlands People that a grieve or farm overseer was the head worker on the farm.

It's a pity Newlands Parish didn't record the mother's name.

I think I've looked up Peebleshire Mis at Mitchell Library in the past but will do so again just in case  I've missed something.

I might also speak to the staff at Bellshill Registration Office who now carry out family research as they have informed me in the past that they can access information which is not yet available online (£15 per hour for the service).  I haven't used this service before but have bought 100 Scotlands People credits for £10 from them.
