Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Place name in Cape Town - completed with thanks
« on: Saturday 21 January 17 02:32 GMT (UK)  »
I recently discovered a faint pencil marking on the back of a very old faded photograph of a cottage. I can make out "cottage ... Cape Town", but have no idea about the middle word. Possibly ends in "...bray"?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Is any one able to guess what this lady's surname is? It appears on the will of Raphael Joshua JOSEPH in 1885, an adopted daughter I had no idea existed, so would love to try to track her down. There's 2 versions on the will.

Can anyone please help me to know what theses regulations were? Before finding this article I didn't know Joshua had anything to do with the Defense Forces. (I'm assuming L F P and S, Glasgow has something to do with his qualifications, although he obtained them at Guy's Hospital London)

"Joshua Raphael Joseph L F P and S Glasgow" "... off the medical list of the Queensland Defense Force, under regulation no 16 and regulation no 23 as amended."

(original here : http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article176138072 about half way down the column)

Many thanks in advance

Australia / James Mackenzie died between 1876 and 1896?
« on: Friday 23 December 16 05:07 GMT (UK)  »
I'm trying to find out some details about James MACKENZIE. He was born in Scotland, married Elizabeth Ann MCINTYRE (possibly 1848) had a few children there then moved to Canada and I think had some more children, then they moved to Australia and had more children in Victoria. Their youngest child (I think) was born in 1876. The obit for their eldest boy who died in Queensland in 1896 says James is already dead. I can see there are a few James Mackenzie's who died in this period, but can't find any death notices to prove which is which.

I would also like to know when they arrived in Australia - Elizabeth's obit in 1920 notes she has been a settler for 64 years, but I don't think this quite works with the Canadian records.

This is the info I have so far:
Elizabeth Ann (Menzies?) McIntyre b1827(Scotland) d 1920 Melbourne
children:
Jane         1848 (Scotland) - (before 1920)
Eliza Mary 1854 (Scotland) -? (married John McGregor in Canada)
Isabella     1855 (Scotland) -? (married Lochart Mulloch in Canada)
Margaret    ?- 1931(died in Vic) (married M Malcolm)
Jessie Catherine 1857-1927 (married ?Martin in Canada)
Marjory May 1858-1946 (Vic)
Alexander Andrew 1861 (Vic) -1896 (Qld)
Donald McIntyre    1863 (Vic) - 1947 (Vic) (married Jessie Joseph NSW)
Ewan Cameron      1865 (Vic) - 1922 (Vic)
Sarah Elizabeth     1867 (Vic) - ? (married William Griffin)
Christina Lillian     1871 (Vic) - 1851(Vic) married Herbert Pollock
Archina McIntyre   1876 (Vic) - before 1920
Bessie                  ? - before 1920

Hope that's not too confusing. Any help finding James death would be most appreciated.

The Common Room / least info obtained from a certificate
« on: Saturday 07 May 16 12:26 BST (UK)  »
I finally shelled out for a death certificate that I thought would provide a few clues or at least confirm identity, only to receive the transcription with almost everything except the name and age (which I already knew) answered as "unknown". Very frustrating! (Although lack of information may possibly confirm identity, as I think the gentleman in question was trying to remain "lost".)

What's the most frustrating lack of information you've received from a certificate? Does this happen often?
