I have sorted out the chronology of the John Godward family, his first wife Louisa Godward nee Skidmore died at about the time of giving birth to her 6th child Ernest luther, 01.04.1888, they were both buried in the Southwater cemetery at the same time.
His second wife Mary Ann then had her first son George around about the time of her marriage to John 3q 1889. They had 8 children, the last 2 were twin sons who died very soon after birth 1q 1900. Again buried in Southwater.
I am now searching for John's birth,he gives various ages on the 3 census. Place of birth Sonning,Reading. Making his birth range 1835 - 1838, his military records make it 1837. There is however another John Godward. Born about the same time, who died in Windsor, my John died in Horsham 1907 which is correct. I have searched births and christenings for John  from 1830 - 1840 using above places and generally Berkshire. His father is George on his marriage record. Can't find anything.  Has anyone any ideas where to look next.??

I have a great grandfather John Godward, I can't find a birth.
on the various census it says
1881 current age 43 born Sonning
1891 current age 56 born Reading
1901 current age 64 born Reading
I have tried searches from 1830 - 1840  Sonning and Reading and Berkshire to cover all errors on census.
His marriage record says father is George Godward.
Can anyone help please?

Thank you CB53
I had the birth for Ernest Luther, but wasn't sure about him.
I didn't know Louisa was buried in southwater,
Very sad all those children and a mother dying, we are very lucky living at the present time with good health care.
Regards Jenny.

By 1901 census John was a gardener living in Shipley. But previous census say apprentice. But not clear to what!

Sorry I am a bit slow and new at this, tried to post but more replies came in and lost the plot.
I don't have the marriage cut only the refernence.
I agree the death of Louisa in 1888 is correct, I think Mary Ann must have taken on her children and then had more then married John. A conclusion I have come to from all the replies on this site.
Thank you

I have a marriage for John Godward to Mary Ann Elliott 28.4.1889. Horsham.
But also have a marriage to Louisa Skidmore, 2q,6d,305 1876 Birmingham.
There seems to be a cross over where both couples end up in Horsham area, with a total of about 15 children. Born from Limerick to Devonport, Birmingham, Horsham.
John and Mary Ann are definitely my tree but I can't work out where Louisa comes in as a mixture of the children are on census for both women's names.
Louisa had son John in Limerick 1878, daughter Louisa 1880 Birmingham.
Mary Ann definitely had George 1889 Shipley(Horsham) then 7 others in Shipley.
But then I found Eliza 1882' Birmingham. Frederick George 1884 and Henry John 1887 Devonport
Can't make out which is their mother and father.

The joys of muddle.
Can anyone help me please????
