England / Vanishing Hazlewood/Allitt children
« on: Friday 08 May 20 01:31 BST (UK)  »
I am going round in circles trying to locate the following children after 1861 Census:
Mother Ann Hazlewood 1828 Mollington - 1862
William Thomas (seems to be known as Thomas) Hazlewood bc 1846 Mollington ) baptized Stoke
    John  Hazlewood bc 1848 Neithrop                                                                   )  25/12/1859
                                                                                                                         ) as Hazlewood/
                                                                                                                                 Allitt
George Hazlewood  bc 1851 - ?Banbury 1851 Dec 16 19 no mmn?                    ) baptized Stoke
    Mary Anne Hazlewood bc 1855                                                                       )  4/2/1861
Charles Henry Hazlewood bc 1856-? Banbury 1856 Jun 3a 612 no mmn?           ) as Hazlewood/
Catherine Hallett b1860 Foleshill  Mar 6d 395 mmn Hazlewood                          )      Allitt
Ann Hazlewood married Thomas Allitt in 1861 Walsgrave on Sowe Mar 6 379 .
In 1861, Thomas and Ann are listed  as Hallett and the children as Hazlewood in Stoke, Warwickshire RG09/2200/70/28.
Ann Allitt died in 1862 Foleshill Dec 6d 299 and Thomas Allitt died in 1873 Foleshill Mar 6d 284.
I did find Thomas in 1871 , as Allett, as a patient in hospital in Coventry RG10/3182/71/2 following an assault.
Sorry for the scrappy bits of information.

The Common Room / Mass Observation Diary 12/5/2020
« on: Tuesday 21 April 20 02:40 BST (UK)  »
I understand that this event will be going ahead this year, although if we are still in lockdown or isolation it will certainly be different to previous years.
I would have loved to read this year's entries in say, 30 or 50 years time just to see how different people handled the situation.

The Lighter Side / Auntie Lal
« on: Tuesday 25 February 20 04:03 GMT (UK)  »
Hello
I am reading some of my grandmother's letters and have come across a reference to an Auntie Lal.
I can't find anyone in the family with a name similar to that, shortened or otherwise.
Any ideas on what the christian name could be?

Occupation Interests / Quirky occupation 1911
« on: Sunday 17 November 19 21:56 GMT (UK)  »
I was looking in the 1911 Census for a relative of mine (he had been in the Holborn Union Workhouse in Mitcham in 1901 so I checked there first) but with no luck.
I did, however, come across this gentleman Thomas Pitman, age 63, born Holborn who gave his occupation as 'Horse hair curler'.
So, I now have a mental picture of horses with perms!

South Africa / James Henry Newton, Durban, South Africa
« on: Sunday 07 July 19 02:49 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to track down information on the above.
I have found some details of his wife and children, namely
Mary Ann bc 1862, Dudley, Staffs, Edward b1886  Matilda Maude b1888 , Ernest b1890, Albert b1892 and Sidney b1897 - all in Durban. The baptisms for Edward and Matilda mention Congella as their address.
By 1901, Mary Ann and children seem to have resettled back in England.
But where is James Henry? I get the impression that he may have been a merchant but haven't found anything to confirm this; when, where he was born; married etc.

World War One / Army discharge under kings regulation paragraph 392 XI
« on: Friday 14 June 19 06:51 BST (UK)  »
I have a relative who was discharged from the English army in 1915 due to misconduct (convictions by a civil power - mainly drunk and disorderly). Would he have been able to enlist at a later date?
The reason for my question is that I have come across someone with the same name and birth year serving in 1918. The service numbers are different but there are other similarities.

United States of America / O'Briens in New York - needle in haystack?
« on: Thursday 16 May 19 23:09 BST (UK)  »
I am looking for information on Patrick O'Brien (bc1865 Ireland) and his wife Annie Johnson (bc 1869 Ireland) who lived in New York.
I think I have details of them in 1900 Census with 3 children - Margaret F, Mary B, William J  all born New York between 1896 and 1900. Also living with them was Walter O'Brien, brother to Patrick, bc 1867 Ireland.
I have no idea when Patrick and Annie married or arrived in USA.
Any ideas or options considered.

Hello, I just went to the ancestry.co.uk site to look up something - and it is free access over this long weekend. It seems to cover a lot of records.
