Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Illegitimacy and DNA Matches
« on: Sunday 17 January 21 22:03 GMT (UK)  »
Hi everyone,

I recently took an Ancestry DNA test and well... it's been interesting to say the least! I have also uploaded to MyHeritage and Living DNA. I have so many DNA matches that I cannot link to any of my trees. I've gone through and grouped them all and built trees for them but I'm getting nowhere. There is a lot of illegitimacy, and I'm hoping I can find out my 2nd Great-Grandfather on my Dad's maternal line, as well as my Great-Grandfather on my Dad's paternal line.

We are currently waiting on a DNA test for my Nana (Dad's Mum). She never questioned if her Dad was in fact her Dad. However, through working with my 1st-2nd and 3rd-4th cousins matches, I've found that my Great-Grandad was my Nana's Mum's best friend. I have no DNA matches to the family of her Dad (well, who we thought was her Dad). No one else will take DNA test because they think it's too expensive.

Another thing that has got me stumped is that I have no matches to my Great-Grandad's family, the Halford's. I've researched the family tree for years and have living relatives in my tree but despite this I have no matches.

I have a 2nd-3rd cousin match with 153cM - I'm wondering if this person is more likely to be related to a Great-Grandparent or Great-Great Grandparent?

If anyone has any tips or advice, I'd be so grateful.

Thank you! :)

The Common Room / Re: Chronic Dementia at 35?!
« on: Tuesday 10 November 20 01:02 GMT (UK)  »
Hi everyone, thanks for all your replies and information. I'm a psychiatric nurse and I cared for dementia patients before moving to my new post so I'm finding it very interesting looking into the history of the illness!

Mark, the year of death was 1874 (not 1872, my mistake!), which is why I was thinking it may have meant another form of mental illness,  but as others have said, it could well have been early onset dementia as we know it today.

That's an interesting find for you Annie! I did look for my relative, Elizabeth, in the admission registers but I couldn't find her. She also died at home so it would seem that she never had to be admitted to an asylum for her illness.

Hi everyone,

Thanks for all of your help. I know that dementia can sadly strike very early but I was surprised to come across it on this record - I should have added that this was in 1872. The reason I was thinking it may have been in reference to another mental illness was due to the use of the term "dementia praecox" around this time.

I've found the death certificate of a relative in my tree. Her cause of death is given as "chronic dementia - 2 years". However, she was only 35 years old (the record also states this). I know the term "dementia" used to cover a lot of mental illnesses such as schizophrenia, but this couldn't be the cause of death? I'm just confused how a doctor could certify that this caused the death of a 35 year old lady... I don't suppose anyone could please shed some light on this for me?

The Common Room / Re: Lost Family in Scotland or Ireland...

Thank you Monica, I didn't know about Patrick, that's so sad. I have been looking through records again trying to find the family but not getting anywhere.

Aghadowey, I've been looking on the GRONI website too, just to see if any names or places match up with the Irish Genealogy website not containing records I may need.

The Common Room / Lost Family in Scotland or Ireland...
« on: Sunday 08 November 20 14:00 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,

I'm really struggling with locating a family in either the Antrim area of Ireland or potentially Edinburgh in Scotland.

James O'Neill was born in 1868 in Derrymore, Antrim, Ireland and Elizabeth Lavery was born in 1875 in Aghagallon, Antrim, Ireland. They had 9 children between 1896 and 1918 in Aghagallon that I'm aware of through a mixture of records and family information: Joseph, Henry, Annie, Mary, John, Kevin, James, Gavin and Patrick.

I've been able to find marriages for John and Mary in Edinburgh, Scotland. John married Helen Carrigan in Edinburgh in 1930, and they then moved back to Aghagallon. I have been able to follow this line of the family to the present day in Aghagallon and England.

Mary married James McGrail in 1926, also in Edinburgh - I haven't been able to find any further records for her, her parents or her siblings.

Cleary John and Mary moved to Scotland, and I'm wondering if perhaps the whole family did too?

Thank you in advance for any help or advice.  :)

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Re: Struggling to decipher name of Mother

Hi everyone,

Annie, the death certificate for Patrick Flynn gives Michael as being deceased. I had viewed the death certificate for Margaret Duffy and both parents names are blank with a line drawn where the name should be and deceased written :(

Thank you for the list of children Monica, there was some names there that I didn't have. :)

Antrim / So many Lancelots - which one?
« on: Saturday 07 November 20 11:27 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,

I'm wondering if someone could please help me with finding the parents of Mary Anne Turtle. She was born in 1835 in Aghalee, married Henry O'Neill on 17 Feb 1868 in Aghagallon, and died 12 May 1905 in Montiaghs.

Her father is recorded as Lance Turtle, a Farmer, on their marriage certificate from 1886 and is not stated to be deceased. I've found a matching baptism record in Aghalee in 1835 which give the parents as Lancelot Turtle and Sally Allen. Mary Ann is stated to be 29 (edit: on the marriage certificate) so this is 4 years off but I know this happens a lot.

There seem to be quite a few Lancelot Turtles in Antrim around this time. I've tried to research them all and listed what I have found to make it easier.

  • Mr Lancelot Turtle of Aghagallon (possibly b. 1767- d. 1828) - had a child with Jane Allen (possibly b. 1779 - d.1849) - Catherine Arabella Turtle in 1813 (Aghalee).
  • Lancelot Turtle Esq of Aghagallon (b abt. 1815 and d. 27 May 1860 - Father was another Lancelot) - married Anne Buillick (d. 1855) in 1853 - had a daughter, Charlotte Sophia Turtle in 1854 (Aghalee) - a Newspaper Record states Charlotte was their only child and died at the residence of her cousin John Buillick in 1865.
  • Lancelot Turtle JP of Aghalee, d. 1888, cannot find a birth record but there is a Lancelot born in 1834 in Aghalee in 1851 Irish Census.
  • Lancelot Turtle, died on 15 Sep 1860 in Derryneasser and is recorded as being a Farmer - John Turtle is an executor. - I think based on his occupation this is most likely him, but I cannot find any further record and Lancelot "appears" to be alive at the wedding in 1886.

I haven't been able to find anything for a Sally Allen or Turtle :(

Thank you for any help or advice in advance! :)

(Sorry for all the information overload - I just thought it would be easier to share all I have found to save people time)

Just wondering if this is connected?

1851 - Nabby Duffy 20 b Ireland

Annie

Thank you, weirdly Nabby is recorded as male here, probably just a mistake? I've searched for a Nabby Duffy born 1831 but haven't managed to find any results.

The DC I found gives Nabby Lyons' age as 84 in 1886, so it would make her the right age to be Patrick's mother. The informant is the matron of the parish lodging house which is where she died. No relatives listed except her parents (Bryan Flynn and Mary Redan - I think).

Maid of Kent, thank you for the baptism record, I've saved it. I've looked at the record on Ancestry to double check in case the name was transcribed incorrectly but it definitely says Bridget. I hope he didn't get the name wrong after all this trouble we've gone to!

I've noticed that the Scottish Marriage Records will state deceased for parents if they have passed, including the entry above the marriage of Patrick to Margaret Duffy in 1886. Both Hugh and Nabby don't have this next to their names so I've searched for deaths/marriages after 1886 for them but I haven't been able to find anything as of yet.

I did find an entry for a Patrick Flynn in the 1851 Scottish Census. Born in approx 1826 in Ireland. Lodging with the McFarlane family in Kirknewton and East Calder. He is also with a Betsey Flynn - possibly his sister?
