US Lookup Requests / Roderick Russell Marriage
« on: Saturday 17 October 09 10:26 BST (UK)  »
Hi

Can anyone give me anything about a marriage of Roderick Russell from Newcastle-upon-Tyne, to a Freda or Frieda somewhere between 1911 and 1916 when their daughter Rodena was born. Possible mother's maiden name was Helbing.

At the time of the 1920 census they were living in San Francisco.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Decipher Gravestone
« on: Saturday 03 October 09 11:07 BST (UK)  »
Here's something different.

I am trying to decipher the chiseled text on a granite gravestone from about 1780.

Whilst the words at the top are legible further down they become less clear. What doesn't help is the fact that it's in French so I don't recognize any of the words.

I have tried doing a brass rubbing style copy with no success as the granite is too rough. I have also tried (with permission) trying to outline the letters with chalk but I'm not having much success with this method either.

I'm sure other people must have been faced with this problem before so has anyone any suggestions?

The Common Room / Sir Ernest Shackleton
« on: Wednesday 21 January 09 21:47 GMT (UK)  »
Hi All

During Shackleton's ill fated expedition to the South Pole, a ship was sent out from the UK to rescue him. In the end it wasn't necessary as Shackleton had managed to reach South Georgia.

What I want to know is what was the name of the ship that was sent out to rescue him?

Glamorganshire / Unable to read "Where born"

Hi

Could someone have a look at the 1901 Census for Cheshunt, Herfordshire for Elizabeth M Turner for me please?

The reference is RG13 1278, page 39.

The birth place has been transcribed as Glannge. Is that a valid place?

Any ideas?

Canada Lookup Request / Elizabeth Mary Turner
« on: Thursday 25 September 08 13:01 BST (UK)  »
Hi

I have a great aunt called Elizabeth Mary Turner, born in Cardiff, Wales around 1874.

I know that she married a Canadian from Ewart Manitoba but what I don't know is whether it was in Wales or Canada.

I'm working on the assumption that she married in Canada as I can't find a Welsh marriage. If that is the case I've been looking at the Canadian Passenger Lists 1865-1935 and can see a Elizabeth Mary Turner arriving at St John's Newfoundland. Now, what I don't have is a subscription to view the image and see her year of birth, arrival date etc.

Any help with the marriage would also be appreciated.

Can anyone help me with the details before I splash out on a subscription?

Lanarkshire / Tedford McCroskerry (and varients)
« on: Saturday 16 August 08 18:22 BST (UK)  »
Hi

McCroskerry (other spellings McCroskery and Croskerry)
Tedford (other spellings - Thetford: Thedford)

Only information I have is marriage cert (26-07-1868) which states names as Tedford Croskerry (widower) (56?), father James Croskerry, to Eliza McCoy, widow (formerly Rowley). Tedford died 15-12-1889 in the workhouse, Newtownards.

Children of James and Eliza were:

Tedford (or Thetford), born 25-02-1869

David,  born 01-04-1871

In 1871, Tedford McCroskerry lived at Church St., Newtownards with his father, mother and half-sister Mary. He was aged 2 years.

In 1881 Tedford McCrosskey was living at Howard St., Bridgetown, Glasgow with his mother and brothers. No mention of his father.

In 1891 Tedford McCrosskey was living at Wandsworth Bridge Road, Fulham with a Samuel Wright and his wife.

At some point around the age of 19, Tedford McCroskery changed his name to George Telford. It is a mystery discovered after his death. This information only came to light at that time as he kept detailed accounts of his birth and places of residence with dates that all tie in with the name Tedford McCroskery. I also have a letter dated 07-08-1927 saying he would be visiting Ireland to see the church his father had built (I am a little doubtful that this is true!).

I am interested to know the history of why he changed his name and any information on the unusual name of Tedford.

Any help or advice where to look would be much appreciated.

Bit of a long shot that anyone can help, but here's hoping!

Many thanks,

Stewart
