Ayrshire / Ayr Sheriff Court Paternity Records
« on: Thursday 12 January 17 15:57 GMT (UK)  »
Our volunteer has just started indexing 'paternity' cases from the register of extracted decrees of Ayr Sheriff Court. 1837 and 1838 are online already and we will add more very soon!

These are cases where the mother of an illegitimate child takes the father to court to prove paternity and make him pay for the child's maintenance.

The work of making the index has been done a a volunteer and it is free to search online at www.scottishindexes.com

If you have not used these records before you may find our learning zone helpful: http://www.scottishindexes.com/learningcourt.aspx

I hope this index helps you!

The address http://maxwellancestry.com.dnpserver.com/census/default.htm was a temporary address while we were working on our websites. www.maxwellancestry.com is still up and running and is updated regularly; just today as it happens.

We have left www.maxwellancestry.com up and running as many sites still link to it and for a few searches it is quicker and easier so some clients prefer it. For most searches however www.scottishindexes.com is much more efficient and contains all the records that are on www.maxwellancestry.com as well as many more.

We may in time take www.maxwellancestry.com down but it will stay up for now and continue to be updated.

So pleased you have found something useful!

In cases after 1855 there should be an RCE if it was a case of 'affiliation and aliment'. If it was simply an aliment case, in other words a man was made to pay for upkeep of the child but not declared to be the father, there will be no RCE. By far the majority of cases are affiliation and aliment.

In cases before 1860 there are also court processes and for some courts these survive after 1860. Processes contain the evidence, generally witness statements which are very interesting! Sometimes you strike gold and there are items such as love letters in the court processes!! You can see an example case in our Learning Zone: http://www.scottishindexes.com/learningcourt.aspx#q5

Hello everyone,

So sorry that www.scottishindexes.com was down; it's back up now and we have added some more records! We were working on the site on Saturday and forgot to recheck the website afterwards, very silly of us!
