Essex / Descendants of William Brewster
« on: Wednesday 02 April 14 05:41 BST (UK)  »
William Brewster married Sarah Smith in 1900 in Maldon. Can anyone tell me anything about their children/descendants? Or how to go about finding them? I think a descendant came to Australia at some stage. I'm very rusty re genealogy at present, not having done any for some time.

I've got a Joseph Wilks who married Ann Reeves 4 Dec. 1794 at Winchcombe in Gloucestershire. They had a son Richard born 1800 at Hallow (baptised Dec 1802) – the only child I could find. Richard married Maria Severn and they had Thomas, Ann, Mary Ann, Caroline, Charlotte, William, Hannah, John (bap. April 1843) and Sarah.

There could be a connection with your John born in 1790 … I'd like to find siblings for my Richard. It seems odd that he appears to have been an only child.

I am related to John Wilks who married Elizabeth Weaver in 1811. They moved with most of their children to New York City around 1843. He was a stair builder and so were his sons. The 1841 census in England lists him as a builder.

Do you happen to know if your John Wilks had connections to any of my Wilks who came from the Hallow/Grimley area in Worcestershire? Joseph Wilks, Richard Wilks, Thomas Wilks?

I'm presuming James Reeves was born in Martley :-)

Thank you, Crista. That Joseph Wilks would fit.

Joseph seems to arrive on the scene and then disappear. Actually, his wife Ann Reeves does too. They only appear to have one son, Richard. I can't help wondering what might have happened to them.

Do you have Richard Wilks' son Thomas in your tree? He married Elizabeth Young 9 Apr. 1855, Chapel of Hallow, Parish of Grimley Cum Hallow.

I've got a James Reeves marrying Ann Box 17 Sep. 1775 at Martley, Worcs. James was born 1742 and buried 19 Oct 1828. Ann was born 1738 and buried 24 Jul 1813. It was their daughter Ann Reeves who married the Joseph Wilks I asked about.

Thanks again.

Hi Millipede,
I think you need to work backwards slowly with this as you said.
Do you have John/Rhodas Marriage Cert to confirm his Fathers name and Occp?

Hi Trish1120

Yes, I've got John WEBB's marriage certificate to Rhoda STEVENS. His occupation was Paper maker. His father was James WEBB and his occupation was also Paper maker. They were married in Woking, Surrey 10th Feb. 1846.

I think it was this James WEBB, John's father, who moved from BKM to Surrey to work at Gresham Press. So it's that James WEBB's (John's father) marriage, and parents, which tie me up in knots  :-\

Thank you again Millepede.

Trouble is, there's a Surrey 1841 census which has him aged 15 in Send with father James and wife Ann. I think I must be on the wrong track – I need to find a father James and wife Ann in, probably, Bucks. I guess I should go to the Bucks list to ask.

I think, though, that James WEBB could have married a Mrs Anne Webb in Burnham, Bucks. about 1821. That would fit, I think.

So complicated. My brain doesn't cope too well with all these ramifications.

Thanks, Millepede.

Thank you, Milliepede.

I should work backwards, I know, and John WEBB was born in 1827 in High Wycombe, Bucks. acc. to a Surrey census. But I was told that there wasn't a baptismal record for him there.

I wonder if you'd mind looking for him, if you can, please? That way I can see if the James you mention is the right one. I have his father as James but don't know who his mother was. If it's inconvenient, please don't worry.

I'm looking for:

James Webb born circa 1793. I think he was baptised in Berks.

He may have been involved in with Arborfield Mill, of which Thomas WEBB and John LOVE were the employers in June 1795 till 1810. So I'm wondering if Thomas WEBB was his father.

Can someone help please?
