That is some great information, thanks. It will take me a while to get through it all and see how it fits with what I have - looks promising on a scan though.

The Chronicle is out for digitizing, I think, but if you send me a message I will send you my email address then I can send you some scans of the relevant articles.

Thanks for all that effort.

Imbecile reference: Newcastle Chronicle, 21 January 1826.

The Isabel you mention is not the Isabel that married Joseph Hedley, at least according to my research. Isabella Herdman was the daughter of Henry Herdman, but she was born in 1710 and married William Smith in 1727. Even if she later married Hedley that would make her 107 when she died. I'm happy to be persuaded otherwise. I have a better candidate for IH but this familial connection with the Herdmans keeps coming up. I think I know why but it would be good to confirm the source for that from someone else.

I can also find no connection between the William Herdman, aged 100, who died at Homers House, and the William Herdman who visited Hedley on the night of his murder, although that seems counter-intuitive.

I am very curious about the WH who died aged 27 who would have been 15 at the time of the murder.

Thanks. I will put that on my list for next week's library adventure.

Ha! Thanks! Maybe I should have processed all my photos before speculating?

You've been incredibly helpful and I truly appreciate that. Maybe I should send you the other names I'm chasing down :)

Thanks. That is the Mackenzie. I went through it with a fine tooth comb yesterday and pulled out lots of useful information I can use. I noted also that Forsyth was a subscriber to Mackenzie, which I found interesting as it suggests a competent level of literacy.

Thanks. I picked this one up yesterday via The Courant, and I picked up his death notice from 26/11/1858. I was hoping for an obit that outlined his career, particularly before 1816 but I have enough for a wee bio of him in my larger project. I really only need him up to 1826.

The Kent connection is a bit of a 'brain-tickle' for me because I would like to know why he was there, particularly at a time when that kind of mobility was not encouraged. He was in the army seems the obvious answer, but I can't prove that.

Another interesting aspect for me is the gap between 1807 and 1816 and his move from Maidstone back up north. Was he involved in law enforcement before 1816, and if so where and when? To be elected as a Serjeant of the Mace, would he have to have been a constable, or perhaps a watchman?

Also, how did he become Newcastle's 'detective'? He is often sent out into other jurisdictions to arrest culprits or investigate crimes, but I can't find where that began. I have an inkling that he was the oldest, or perhaps just most mature, SotM, so he was deemed the most reliable.

The pondering continues...

Thanks again - I have him pretty much worked out now, but I'm still pondering Kent. That would be the best place for him if he was a soldier but I couldn't find him in an online search - that doesn't mean he wasn't one, just that I couldn't find him. I found a couple of things about him in the Courant today that were interesting too.

Thanks. I wonder why Kent?

(off to hunt through newspapers but will have to ponder this)
