I agree, I think he did a runner too. Have found one record for a W Woodruff from Kent on 16 Oct 1905 working as a ships steward on way to Sidney NSW aboard the vessel Coolgardia. Then I found a record on Australian census in 1914 in Hagley, Wilmot Tasmania, occupation Labourer. He seemed to be living alone. After that nothing even searching into the 1940's for him, presuming he did not come back.
Mary died in Bridge April 1957 at St Augustines Hospital. She is not listed as Widow on 1911 but married. I have the census sheet for her.
His last child attributed to Mary was Gertrude born 1902, he was a Navvy and living at Cook's Cottages, Dover. Then next child Ada Mary down as Reynolds daughter on 1911 census born 1907, so could tie in with the trip to Aus.
I couldn't find him in WW1 records but his age would perhaps not make him eligible for active service. (50 yrs old).
