In the mid-18th century, I have a corporal, later sergeant, in this regiment recorded as marrying in Warminster, Wiltshire (1753). His only child was born in Dorset, his wife's home. He also died in Dorset in 1772. Given that his wife was born in 1725, I expect him to be of similar age.
This is not long after Culloden. Would the recruits/soldiers be mainly of Scottish origin or might they have been recruited elsewhere? I ask because the soldier in question might have a Scottish name, or it might be the southern England version. He was James Watt or Watts. The version with the 's' is very common in Wiltshire and other southern counties and the name varies with the records. I'm trying to decide where to look for his origins: north or south of the border.
Any ideas, please?
