Armed Forces / John Dowd, 1838-1842 - 1909, Boyle, Roscommon, 14th Foot Regiment
« on: Thursday 01 April 21 13:57 BST (UK)  »
Hello,

I have a part brick wall. I'm looking for the mother's name of my great great grandfather John Dowd and possibly any siblings he had.

He was born in Roscommon around 1837-1842 - his father on his marriage record to Catherine Tansey is listed as Patrick Dowd, a Labourer. On the 1901 census he is listed as being 63 years of age, making him born in 1838/9 & on his death record in 1909 he is listed as being 67 years of age making him born in 1841/42. He served in the 14th foot regiment, his pension record below

Pension record
John Dowd 42 yrs born abt  1837
Birth Place:Bogle, Roscommon
Pension Admission or Examination Date: 11 Feb 1879
Regiment:   14 Foot
Rank:   Sargeant
Regimental Number:   1483

Bogle is likely to actually be Boyle.

Travelling People / John George Seth & Catherine Perry
« on: Thursday 18 March 21 00:38 GMT (UK)  »
I've been told that my great grandmother Alice Kate Seth born in 1894, Brentford Middlesex came from a Gypsy family. Her parents were John George Seth (1850-1909) & Ellen Susan Hubbard & siblings were Ellen born in 1879, Jane born 1884, Robert born in 1891 & Daisy born in 1896. John George Seth born in 1850; his siblings are Matilda born 1849, Catherine Seth 1853, Rosina Seth 1855 & marrying into a Gregory family from Hampshire it seems, Susannah Seth born 1857, Robert Seth born 1860, Emma Seth born in 1861, Mary Seth born in 1863, Annie Seth born in 1866 & Fanny Seth born in 1867 - all were born in Twickenham, Middlesex. Further back on the Seth Line, my great great great grandparents are John George Seth (1820-1892,) Twickenham, Middlesex) & Mary Susannah Turner (1823-1905, Wandsworth, London). My brick wall on my Seth line is my 4th great grandparents John George Seth & Catherine Perry, both born circa 1790, John passed in 1832 & Catherine passed in 1828.

Yep,

I think Archibald depending what year could be his father in law. On the subject of DNA, I do match someone who's great great grandmother was a Rosanna McCranor born in 1839 and a hint came up as the father being a William McCreanor born in 1813.

Samuel and Jane had Mary Jane bapt Nov 3, 1835, James  bapt Nov 1, 1835, William bapt Mar 12m 1838 and Samuel Apr 29, 1841.  Moygannon
Thomas and Elizabeth had Mary Jane Nov 7, 1835, William John Jan 12, 1838, Elizabeth July 7, 1839
Thomas and Ann had Margaret Aug 17, 1842  Ballynabraggett

All baptisms and I stopped looking at 1846.
Yep, Samuel & Jane are my 3rd great grandparents. Overall they had 12/13 children! Do you think this Thomas who had children in the 1830’s with Mary Jane could be my Samuel’s brother?

McCreanor married Eleanor Seawright 1862.  I'll look for Thomas and Elizabeth's children, but both have a child named Wm.  I wondered if this was their father's name.  Donaghcloney records start about 1829 after a gap, but I'll see if McCreanors use the church pre1771.

Ah yes, I do recall that one. Yes, the Samuel McCreanor who married Sarah Hamilton & is the father of Thomas also is the brother of William who married Rachel Livingstone.

The records of Tullylish COI probably were transcribed by a Mrs. Butler of Louisiana years ago and given to the Mormons.  I copied records from their tape. I found an on-line listing of her work years ago, but my copy of the file now is an .xlr file I can no longer read. The missing children were either baptized in a different church or Mrs. Butler didn't record them which is doubtful.  McCreanor's previous marriage was at Donaghcloney Presbyterian Church where he said he was born about 1839.  Donaghcloney COI has Wm McCreanor bapt by Samuel and Jane of Moygannon in Mar 12, 1838 and Samuel about 1841 with a Thomas McCreanor and Elizabeth having children in Ballynabraggett.  Samuel McCreanor married Jane Major July 5, 1830, both of Donaghcloney Parish in the COI church. There are several churches in the area and the missing baptisms are no doubt in records I do not have.

Yeah William McCreanor was born around then and his parents were Samuel McCreanor and Jane Major - another brick wall of mine as well. Who did he marry before Rachel Livingstone? I will have a look. Thomas McCreanor is a new name to me too which I haven’t heard

On the death record Richard us listed as Richard Levingston dying in Lurgan on 28/08/1889 and his wife Jane Livinston listed as a widow dying 5th February 1897 in Lurgan, granddaughter Minnie Fell as an informant.

Richard died in Clare townland in Waringstown R.D. aged 80.

Hi, yes that is correct. On Irishgenealogy it is listed as under Lurgan so that’s where to find the record

Here is the problem.  They are not listed in Donaghcloney COI records as marrying in 1835.  In Clare weaver Richard and Jane Livingston have  Wm bap 4-8-1827 Rebecca 1-8-1825, Sarah 2-28-1836,Richard 12-26-1841, Thomas 2-18-1844, William 6-7-1846,  Elizabeth 4-20-1847, John 2-21-1949, Mary Ann 9-27-1853.  At that point I stopped taking notes from a Mormon tape I rented.  The bapt should be in familysearch records.

A Richard dies in Clalre 2-10-1847 at 23 which is probably the one above a second Richard dies 2-19-1847no age or I missed it, Rebecca of Clare died 2-12-1847 at 20. There are so many Livingstons, that death records are not reasonable to search.

There was a Ballyhannon Richard and Jane having kids 1818and up  bapt at Seagoe, but I don't expect they are yours.  I'm just looking for a second church yours might have used.

I don't remember if these were actual or transcribed records of Tullylish COI.  Do you have Church of Ireland Livingstons?  Did they live in Clare, Co Down?  Are your dates baptism dates or are they from a later event like a census or death record?

Hi Kat I will have to check but do not recognise that. No, the dates I have are dates of birth. Richard Livingston also is listed as still being alive on the marriage records of his children. Ellen married William John Duff in September 1862 in Banbridge, Sarah married Christopher Fell in Banbridge 1873 then married William McCrory in 1888. My Rachel married my great great grandfather William McCreanor in March 1864 - (Sarah Livingston & William John Duff as witnesses) in Banbridge. And yes they lived in Clare Townland. On the death record Richard us listed as Richard Levingston dying in Lurgan on 28/08/1889 and his wife Jane Livinston listed as a widow dying 5th February 1897 in Lurgan, granddaughter Minnie Fell as an informant.
