Warwickshire / Company Records - Assistance Please.
« on: Monday 07 December 15 23:21 GMT (UK)  »
(Hope this is the correct forum).

I am looking for info on a jeweller, by the name of William Frederick Woodward, b. c. 1876, and his wife Florence Emily (nee Garbett) b.c. 1871, whom, I believe, were the proprietors of various companies in the early part of the C20th. Woodward is recorded in the 1901 census as being a 'Metal Goods Manufacturer'.

To the best of my knowledge, Woodward traded under a number of different names at (I presume) various times, such as 'Woodward & Company', 'Gough & Company' and 'F. E. Woodward'.

The Edinburgh Gazette (April 1905) mentions bankruptcy, though Woodward was (back) in business around the Great War period, manufacturing British military cap badges.

A bit of rummaging has produced several addresses for him: 251 New John Street, West Birmingham... 2 Maurice Road, King's Heath, Worcester... 35 Albion Street, Birmingham... 64 Branston Street, Birmingham.

My main interest is in how/where to obtain company records in respect of the Woodwards' businesses, particularly those connected with the manufacture of military badges. Would anyone have any experience in this sort of research and/or advice as to where archives of this nature might be held/accessed?

With thanks,

Peter.

Ken,

Very much appreciate your help. Many thanks for taking the time to reply.

The search goes on!

Kind regards,

P

Hi Peter

I cannot find a record for RN service - http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/records/royal-naval-seamen.htm

Unfortunately there is no way of finding a merchant seaman between 1858 and 1917 without you knowing a ship's name.

Armed Forces / Searching for RN Service Record - Arkell
« on: Friday 08 August 14 20:35 BST (UK)  »
Having very little success searching for Royal Navy records in respect of William Matthew Arkell (1871-1960).

William first married in 1895, which narrows down the possible parameters of his service to anywhere from the mid-1880s to the year of his marriage.

The surname is sometimes incorrectly spelt as 'Askell' (as well as other variations) and even on one occasion as 'Abbott'!

It is not 100% certain at this stage that his maritime service was with the Royal Navy, and could conceivably have been with the Merchant Navy.

Any assistance with this search much appreciated.

With thanks,

Peter.

This is a photo of my mother’s parents. Any information on the service of Arthur Davison would be greatly appreciated.

He served with the Royal Norfolk Regiment

Possibly his Army No is 170203

Below is the only other information I have

Mum’s Family History

Daniel Davison – Arthur’s father (mole catcher)

Isabel Hortence Davison - Arthur’s mother?

William Barber – Jessie’s father (agricultural labourer)

Arthur Davison born 8 December 1890, Aylsham, Buxton.

Arthur Davison (agricultural stockman) married Jessie Barber 6 February 1918, Parish of Skeyton, Norfolk

Arthur Davison resided Swanton Abbot at time of marriage

Jessie Barber resided Skeyton at time of marriage

Cheers
Paul

Hello Paul,

Without wishing to be in any way pedantic, this man served with the Norfolk Regiment, as opposed to the Royal Norfolk Regiment. The 'Royal' title was conferred upon Regiment on its 250th anniversary, in 1935.

I can find only one MIC for the Norfolks in the name of Davison, with first initial 'A'.

A. A. Davison, Pte. Norfolk Regt (and Essex Regt.) Army numbers: 29111 and 41380 (respectively). Awarded VM & BWM.

However, there is an Army pension record available on Ancestry, of an 'Arthur Davison' of Swanton Abbot, serving with the Norfolk Regiment and with the service number 170203.

May I ask the source of the service number you quoted: 170203?

Regards,

P.

Hi Folks,

I'm looking for further information about actg Lt. Col. Stanley Clare BRYANT.

Looks like he was a rather busy man - served in both wars, rose to Act Lieut Colonel, awarded OBE for services (Infantry) in Burma [ABRO] (Gazette May 1943).

Apart from his birth in March 1898 I don't have any other information except 2 shipping records - Liverpool to Bombay 1944 on the "Modasa" and Singapore to Liverpool July 1946 on "Bosphorus"

Have no idea if he married, any children or when he died so would appreciate any sightings or any information about his war/army service.

Thanks

Di

Di,

Stanley's MIC (Great War) shows he served with the Yorkshire Regiment/Worcester Regiment, attached to the Yorkshire Regiment: http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/SearchUI/Details?uri=D1561472

London Gazette, August 1921: http://www.london-gazette.co.uk/issues/32430/supplements/6653

London Gazette, June 1943: http://www.london-gazette.co.uk/issues/36037/supplements/2519

Recommendation for Award in 1946 whilst: http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/SearchUI/Details?uri=D7387418

Further info of a non-military nature available on your man - not sure if you require assistance with that.

P.

World War One / Re: Ben Eric Harrop
« on: Tuesday 04 February 14 04:34 GMT (UK)  »
Hi, i'm just checking if i can fill the gaps on the service record of my grandfathers uncle, Ben Eric Harrop, born in Oldham in 1886. I was told some time ago by his son who has since passed away that Ben was mentioned 3 times in dispatches and had recieved some medals (though i never saw these & dont know what they were). The only record Ive ever seen in relation to his army career reads as follows:

Military Correspondence: No: R13481 Name: Cpl B E Harrop Regt: 1st K. R. Reg C. Your Commanding Officer and Brigade Commander have informed me that you have distinguished yourself by conspicuous bravery in the field on 30th November 1917. I have read their reports and, although promotion and decorations cannot be given in every case I should like you to know that your gallant action is recognised and how greatly it is appreciated.

Can anyone give me any further details about Ben's career in the army please?

Many thanks, Luke

Armed Forces / Re: More uniforms to identify
« on: Monday 03 February 14 19:42 GMT (UK)  »
Hello, Thanks for all the replies.
I don't have names for the 2 brothers in Naval uniform, but they are from my Welsh side of the family.
Possible surname is Walters.
What sort of date would the uniform be?

The RNAS and the RFC combined in April 1918 to become the RAF. Therefore the uniforms (in theory at least) pre-date this.

Hi everyone,
Can anyone tell me where the above company were stationed in 1918 please ?
Thanks
Mary

Can't seem to find unit war diaries for 973 Area Employment Coy, on the NA site:

http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/SearchUI/s/res?_aq=Employment%20Company&_ep=Labour%20Corps&_cr1=WO%2095&_ro=any&_advtxt=(Employment%20AND%20Company)%20AND%20(%22Labour%20Corps%22)&_ps=60

Perhaps a member with more knowledge of this unit will be able to point you towards other resources.

Regards,

P.
