Armed Forces / Re: Identifying uniforms
« on: Sunday 02 February 14 17:51 GMT (UK)  »
I have several family photos and I would like to identify the uniforms/regiments. Some of them, I know the names of the men, some I don't. All are from Wales.
Thank you in advance, Debravole

Looks like Army Service Corps, cap badge and 'ASC' shoulder title.

Hi Peter
I have managed to find his records (42 pages !) so all is revealed. Thank you so much for pointing me in the right direction. I would never have found them otherwise  :)
Kindest regards
Mary

Mary,

No thanks necessary - my input was minimal. Very happy to have been of some small assistance.

All the very best,

I have been researching my Grandfathers WW1 service and while luckily his pension records still survive some of the writing is difficult to decipher. I had been assuming that his service was with various battalions of The Royal Fusiliers however on closer inspection of the document I am pretty sure the first line of his service record says "1 Co of Ldn Yeo" 16.11.15 to 12.12.16, so this was before he was subsequently transferred to The Royal Fusiliers.
His name was Thomas Thatcher and his regimental number 62273. He enlisted 16.11.15 and was wounded on 26 September 1917 while serving with 4th battalion Royal Fusiliers. He was then sent home and discharged. I don't know if this link will work but if it does it is to the section of his pension records dealing with his service records.

So I have a pretty good idea from the official War Diaries etc about what he was doing from Dec 1916 to September 1917 but I am at a bit of loss with the earlier period. There seem to have been three battalions of 1st County of London Yeomanry and I don't think its possible to tell which one he was posted too. If it was to 3/1 then that was a training battalion based at Ranealagh Park during that period, but it seems odd that he should spend almost a year training when the battles were raging across the Channel. By contrast my Great Uncle enlisted with the The Rifle Brigade in February 1916 and was in France by August and had died of his wounds by early October that same year
Any help with information about the County of London Yeomanry would be very welcome.
Paul

Paul,

Here is some info on the 1st County of London Yeomanry, which may be of use:

Women often had their photo taken in the uniform of a serving loved one (husband/BF/father/brother etc).

Agreed; a common practice of the time:

Hi,

I am currently researching the history of my Great-Grandfather, Harold John Nicholls / Nichol, born Wimbledon 1902 (but may not have given accurate birth year when joining up?). He married in Wiltshire in 1928, and moved to London / Surrey in the 1930s. I have a picture of him in military uniform, so was wondering if anyone would be able to tell me anything about which regiment, rank, date etc. I have yet to track down a service record. He is the person with an 'x' above his head, on the left. (The message is an attachment, as not too sure how to insert it into the main post here)

Thanks,

Laura

Laura,

It looks as though your great grandfather was a Corporal with the Bedfordshire Regiment, or even possibly the Bedfordshire & Hertfordshire Regiment (cannot quite see the cap badge clearly and do not currently have collar badge ref books to hand). In 1919, the Bedfordshire Regiment was renamed the Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire Regiment.

There is an MIC on Ancestry for a '267172 Corporal Harold Nicholls' whom, it appears, served with both the Bedfordshire Regiment, and the Herfordshire Regiment. He was awarded the British War Medal, and Victory Medal.

There are also two other 'Harry Nicholls' both Privates, both of whom served with the Beds Regt, and one Harry James Nichols (different spelling of surname), of the Beds Regt but also a Private.

Hope this is of some help.

Hi everyone,
I have a lovely example of shell art from WW1 and have been trying to find out more about the man who made it.
It is inscribed with the following;
Cpl MacDonald
Scottish Rifles
18831
Salonika
The shell is inscribed 10.7.15 on the bottom and the fuse 12.15
I just can't find anything out ?
Can anyone help please ?
Many thanks
Mary

Theatre of war entered: France, 3rd August 1915
Awarded BWM, VM & 1914-15 Star.

Ref: MIC / Ancestry.

Thanks to everyone for the replies, however, my man is Hull born and bred and died there in 1968.
So, the mystery continues with Mr Coldray, Couldrey etc etc still evading me.

I have no idea whether or not the info I found relates specifically to you man; it may well not be him, but being from Hull, would not preclude him from serving with the Herts Regt.

All the best with your research :-)

World War One / Re: Edgar George Hall, County of London regiment
« on: Tuesday 28 January 14 17:41 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,  I am trying to find out if my Grandfather, Edgar George Hall who I know very little about ever saw active service in WW1. The only details I have are that he was a private 3284, 3/10th County of London regiment. Journeyman (not sure what that means) Lantern slide maker.
This was the Hackney division I believe which is where he lived.

I think at some point the 3/10th just became the 10th, but it is unclear if they were just a reserve battalion providing supplies in this country or if they ever saw action abroad. I would love to know his  war history and service details, but can't seem to get much further.

Any help much appreciated. I think he was born in 1894, although different census records suggest 1889 or 1894

Denzie,

May I ask where the military information you have on Edgar, comes from?

Regards,

P
