Yorkshire (North Riding) / Elizabeth Hull. Stays.
« on: Monday 09 May 22 16:49 BST (UK)  »
I have a record of the birth of Edward Burnsides 9 February 1803 to

Ambrose Burnsides, native of Blackwell  (Darlington)
by his wife
Elizabeth Hull native of Stays

Anyone know of Stays, or could it be Staithes (colloq)

Cannot find the marriage of Elizabeth Hull and Ambrose, but have a marriage for Elizabeth Harrison (widow)  to Ambrose 16 February 1802, St Cuthbert Darlington.

Could Elizabeth Hull and Elizabeth Harrison be the same person,  and where is/was Stays?

Very many thanks.

This is a sad story I'm afraid.  William Porteous was the eldest brother of my great grandfather.  In the 1860s he was a miller at Linn Mill and tragically committed suicide in the mill race in 1865.  Agnes and the family did not fare so well after that.  I recently had a query from another source about Agnes Graham and hoped to find a little about her early history.  Linn Mill is now I believe, known as Riverside Mill.

Many thanks

Thank you for replies.

I have in the past used scotlandspeople, and find their records excellent, usually answering all the questions asked.

Unfortunately I found it very expensive from South Africa.  £1.50 for six credits for one query is very reasonable in GBP,  but  when it becomes +-R30 in ZAR not so reasonable. Sadly the rate of exchange is prohibitive.

For all your replies and input, my grateful thanks, query answered and appreciated.

Thank you,Ceeoh

1851 Tile Sheds, Long Newton, Durham
George Moses         Head     45
Elizabeth Moses      Wife       43  (born Hall)  (later married Thomas Parlour}
Christopher Moses  Son       20

Mary Ann Portows                10   Niece (Porteous)
Mary Hall                              71   Mother-in-Law

George Bell                         24  Brother-in-Law
Margaret Bell                       24  (Born Hall) Sister-in-Law

John Portows                        2  Nephew (Porteous)

I suspect baby John may have been absorbed into the family and eventually became John Bell or John Bell Porteous.

Thank you rootschatters, once again a success to record.

In 1851 (census) John P (my g-grandfather) was lodging  with a Johnson family in Egglescliffe. Co. Durham.  Son Williamson was with him.

(Children Mary Ann 1841, James 1843, Williamson 1845, John 1848)

The second child my grandfather James was with his maternal uncle in Crook.

Mary Ann and the baby John were with the extended Hall family in Tile Sheds, Long Newton. Co. Durham.  H.0.107/2383  (I hope that is the correct reference where do I find the RG number?)

Jane's sister Elizabeth married a George Moses and then a Thomas Parlour!  This would explain Mary Ann Parlour on census).

I suspect the baby John became John Bell or John Bell Porteous as they are all together in 1851.

It would appear that the headstone is a memorial for Jane (my g-grandmother) her daughter Mary Ann and granddaughter Jane (Boddy)Porteous.  Possibly Williamson being the only one actually buried there.

Thank you for all this wonderful information, your interest and help is truly most appreciated.

Thank you for replies.

I do not know what the actual inscription says.  Someone is very kindly going to check that for me - if it is readable.
It is possible Mary Ann married and died shortly thereafter.
The Wallas/Wallace is a good fit.

I have come across the Farndale connection previously but more or less discarded it as there was a Portas family in Farndale with a daughter Mary the same age.

Many thanks, will follow this up, looks promising.

I know the mother Jane is not buried there, she is buried in Norham Churchyard Northumberland (a cholera victim).

 That leaves William(son) .

Hopefully I will get a clearer picture of the actual inscription.

Thank you for your help.

I have seen the surname as Porteus (census) after her father's second marriage.

However I think it unlikely this is "my" Mary Ann, although it's the nearest so far!

Many thanks

Mary Ann had a daughter Jane Boddy Porteous in 1859. Northallerton, after that I had no idea where either of them were.  Her father and second family were in the Ryedale district so it came as quite a surprise to find Mary (and her brother) died and interred in the area.  Haven't found her 1861 unfortunately.
